Perry and Chavez clinch NCAA berths
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Four members of the Ohio State women's tennis team traveled to Cary, N.C., for the ITA All-American Championships. The tournament, with both singles and doubles, included prequalifying, qualifying and man draw action.
Buckeye juniors Teah Chavez and Luciana Perry clinched berths in the NCAA Singles Championship by advancing to the quarterfinals and went on to advance to the semifinals. Sophomore Nao Nishino and junior Audrey Spencer won twice in qualifying to clinch a singles main draw spot. The duo dropped their first round main draw matches to fall to the consolation draw, where Nishino reached the quarterfinals. Chavez and Perry won two matches in doubles qualifying to earn a main draw spot, where they posted a first round win before falling to the top seed. Spencer and Nishino notched two wins in doubles prequalifying to advance to the qualifying draw, where they fell in the first round to the No. 3 seed.
The All-American Championships are the first event of the year where players can earn a berth into the NCAA Championships, which will be held this fall. Ten singles players (eight main draw quarterfinalists and two feed-in consolation finalists) and four doubles teams (four main draw semifinalists) earned a spot. Read more on the Path to the NCAA Championships
Main Draw Singles
Luciana Perry, the No. 3 seed, and No. 7 seed Teah Chavez both opened main draw action with straight-set victories Wednesday in the Round of 64. Thursday, Perry dropped her first set but rallied for a victory, losing just five games the rest of the way, and Chavez was victorious in straight sets.Â
Friday morning, Perry and Chavez clinched berths in this fall's NCAA singles championship with straight set wins in the Round of 16. Perry defeated a player from Cal, 7-6 (4), 6-0, and Chavez downed the No. 9 seed from Oklahoma, 6-3, 6-4. They returned to the courts in the afternoon and both Perry and Chavez were straight set winners to advance to the semifinals.Â
In the semifinals Saturday, Chavez fell in straight sets to the No. 4 seed from Stanford. Perry lost in three sets to the No. 9 seed from Texas.
Nao Nishino and Audrey Spencer, who both earned their main draw spot out of qualifying, fell in their first round matches Wednesday and dropped to the consolation bracket.
Nishino was a three-set winner in the first round of consolation, followed by back-to-back straight-set wins. She advanced to the quarterfinals because of an injury walkover, where she lost in straight sets Saturday. Spencer advanced out of round one because of an injury walkover and then fell In the next round.
Main Draw Doubles
Teah Chavez and Luciana Perry advanced to the second round with a 7-6 (8), 6-4 victory over a team from Appalachian State in the Round of 32, breaking for the victory. The duo fell to the top seed from North Carolina in round two.
Qualifying Singles
Audrey Spencer and Nao Nishino both clinched a spot in the main draw with two wins in qualifying. In the first round, Spencer won in straight sets and Nishino rallied for a three-set victory. In round two, Nishino was a straight-set winner and Spencer came back to win after dropping the first set.
Qualifying Doubles
The duo of Teah Chavez and Luciana Perry, the No. 2 seed in qualifying, posted two comeback wins to advance to the main draw. In round one, they topped a team from Yale, 0-6, 7-6, 10-8, with the tandem down 3-6 in the match tiebreaker. Against a team from Baylor in round two, the Buckeye team was unable to overcome an early break and lost the first set 6-4. They rolled in the second set, 6-1, and then jumped out to an early lead in the match tiebreaker en route to a 10-6 win.
In the first round, the team of Spencer and Nishino was clipped in a match tiebreaker, 1-6, 6-4, 10-5, against a duo from Wichita State, the No. 3 seed in the qualifying draw. The Buckeyes dropped their consolation match Tuesday.
Prequalifying Doubles
Audrey Spencer and Nao Nishino were the No. 3 seed in the doubles prequalifying draw and won two matches in straight sets to advance to the qualifying bracket, downing teams from Kansas and Arkansas.
