
Buckeyes Battle, Fall to Cavaliers in Five Sets in Sports Imports Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's volleyball team (2-5) fell in five sets (25-15, 20-25, 7-25, 25-23, 12-15) against Virginia (6-3) on Friday evening in the opening match of the Sports Imports Classic.
Ohio State used a 6-0 run midway through the first set to take control on its way to a 25-15 set win. Virginia evened the match with a 25-20 set win in the second, holding a narrow lead throughout. The Cavaliers took the match advantage with a 25-7 win in the third set. After surrendering the first six points of the fourth set, the Buckeyes staged a comeback to win the set by a 25-23 margin and force a fifth set. The fifth set was back and forth in nature with Virginia prevailing by a 15-12 margin.

- S1: Back-to-back kills from Mia Tuman capped a 4-0 OSU run that gave the Buckeyes an early 7-3 lead. Virginia responded with a 6-0 run to take its first lead of the match at 9-7, prompting an Ohio State timeout. The Buckeyes regained momentum with a 6-0 run to take an 18-12 lead. Kaia Castle secured a 25-15 set win for Ohio State with her second kill of the match.
- S2: The Cavaliers started strong in the second set, building a 10-4 advantage. Jen Flynn Oldenburg won a challenge to begin a 5-0 Buckeye run, getting Ohio State within one at 10-9 following back-to-back aces from Hannah Jones. Virginia strung together a few points to extend its lead to 19-14. The Buckeyes got within one again at 20-19 but were unable to take the lead as the Cavaliers evened the match with a 25-20 set win.
- S3: Virginia began the third set strong, building leads of 5-1 and 14-6 amidst an Ohio State timeout. The Cavaliers scored the final 11 points of the set to win by a 25-7 margin.
- S4: The Cavaliers scored the first six points in the fourth set. After a timeout, the Buckeyes battled back to get within one at 10-9. A block from Ashley Carr and Jones tied the set at 13 apiece. Ohio State grabbed its first lead since the first set, 17-16, on Jones' fourth ace of the match. The teams traded points as the set was tied at points 13 through 19 before three unanswered OSU points gave the Buckeyes a 22-19 advantage. Virginia was unable to tie the set as Ohio State earned a 25-23 set win to force a fifth set.
- S5: The Buckeyes opened scoring in the fifth set and the teams traded points until a 4-0 Virginia run gave the Cavaliers a 7-4 lead. Ohio State scored back-to-back points but Virginia had the 8-6 advantage at the break. The Buckeyes got back within one at 8-7 but the Cavaliers won a challenge to go up 11-7. Ohio State was unable to take the lead and Virginia won by a 15-12 margin.
- This was just the second meeting in program history between Ohio State and Virginia.
- This was the Buckeyes' third five-set match of the season.

- Continuing action at the Sports Imports Classic, Virginia and Troy will face off on Saturday at 3 p.m. Ohio State and Troy will wrap up the tournament on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast live on B1G+. Prior to Sunday's match, there will be a block party and following the match, there will be a meet and greet with the Buckeyes on the concourse.
