Ohio State Drops Season Opener Against VCU

The Buckeyes fell on Friday afternoon in the first match of the Canes Classic.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's volleyball team (0-1) opened the 2025 regular season with a loss (24-26, 20-25, 17-25) against VCU on Friday afternoon. The match was the first in the Canes Classic, a tournament hosted by Miami (FL).
Ohio State jumped out to an early lead in the first set, but VCU used a late rally to wrap up a 26-24 set win. The Rams used a 7-0 run midway through the second set to take control of the set, winning 25-20.

- S1: The Buckeyes used a pair of 5-1 runs to take an early 10-5 lead on an ace from Kaitlyn Hoffman. A block from Sydney Wyman and Mina Gunes sent Ohio State into the media timeout with a 15-9 lead. VCU used a 4-0 run to tie the set at 21 and the teams traded points before back-to-back scores by the Rams gave VCU a 26-24 set win.
- S2: Ohio State started strong with a pair of 4-0 runs to take a 9-5 lead on a block from Gunes and Wyman. OSU led by a 13-10 mark, but VCU responded with the next seven points to take a lead that would not be relinquished. The Buckeyes scored six of the final nine points of the set but fell by a 25-20 margin.
- S3: The third set was close early with eight ties by the time the score was 11-11. VCU scored four of the next five points and led for the remainder of the match. The Buckeyes got within one on Reese Wuebker's second ace of the match but the Rams won the set by a 25-20 mark.
- Six players made their Buckeye debut in the match and four made their collegiate debut.
- Mina Gunes reached double figure kills in her collegiate debut, leading the Buckeyes with 10 kills. She hit .375, making only one error on 24 attacks.
- Sydney Wyman led all players with seven blocks, having a hand in all but two of the Buckeyes' blocks.
- Mia Tuman led the match with 25 assists.
- Olivia Hasbrook led Ohio State's back line with eight digs.
- S1: Seven different Buckeyes recorded a kill, led by Gunes' five in her first collegiate set. Reese Wuebker led all players with six digs in the set.
- Ohio State wraps up its participation in the Canes Classic on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Buckeyes will face the host team in a match scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+.
