Ohio State Opens 2025 Season at Canes Classic This Weekend

The Buckeyes will face VCU on Friday and Miami (FL) on Saturday in Coral Gables, Fla.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's volleyball team opens the 2025 season at the Canes Classic, playing VCU and Miami (FL) down in Coral Gables. Friday's match against VCU is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., while Saturday's match against Miami (FL) will start at 5 p.m. and be broadcast live on ESPN+.

- Ohio State wrapped the 2024 season with a 14-16 overall record and was 7-13 against Big Ten competition.
- The Buckeyes move into a new era this season with seven new student-athletes and two new assistant coaches. This is the first team comprised entirely of Jen Flynn Oldenburg's recruits.
- VCU capped the 2024 season with an 18-9 record and was 16-2 in A-10 play, including a 14-match win streak leading into the postseason.
- The Rams fell to Loyola Chicago in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship in four sets (25-18, 24-26, 21-25, 17-25).
- VCU enters the season with six newcomers on the squad, including four transfers. The Rams return their top two hitters from last season, Julia Rienks and Lara Del Core, who each averaged more than 3.0 kills/set in 2024.
- Ohio State leads 4-0 in the all-time series against VCU and is 1-0 when facing the Rams at a neutral site.
- The teams most recently met on Sept. 11, 2021 and OSU earned a sweep (25-15, 25-23, 25-17).
- The previous neutral site meeting took place on Sept. 25, 1976 at the Eastern Kentucky Invitational where the Buckeyes were victorious (15-5, 15-2).
- Miami (FL) wrapped up the 2024 schedule with a 22-11 overall record and a 12-8 mark in conference play.
- The Hurricanes advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where they fell to Nebraska.
- The 'Canes return All-American Flormarie Heredia Colon after she was second in the conference in 2024 in points/set (4.93) and kills/set (4.30). She was named to the AVCA Player of the Year Watch List last month.
- This will be the third meeting in the all-time series between Ohio State and Miami (FL) with the Buckeyes claiming both prior matches. This will be the first match between the teams in Coral Gables.
- Last season, the Hurricanes visited Covelli in September when the Buckeyes earned a straight-set (25-21, 25-21, 25-16) victory.
- The only other meeting happened on Sept. 14, 1981 at Central Florida.
