Ohio State Set for home opener Aug. 28 vs. Oakland
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 3 Ohio State (0-1) fell 1-0 in the season opener at Virginia Tech (1-0) Thursday at Thompson Field in Blacksburg, Virginia.
The Buckeyes face Oakland in the home opener at 7 p.m. Aug. 28 in the second game of the 2025 Wolstein Classic. Dayton faces Temple at 4 p.m. to kick off the event at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
- Virginia Tech scored the only goal of the match in the 41' off the foot of Colin Beutel that was deflected in front of the Ohio State goal and then found the back of the net.
- Several Buckeyes made their first career starts in the match against the Hokies. Freshmen Aaron Hurge and Justis Olorunto along with redshirt sophomore Zsombor Onodi earned their first career starts. Freshman Nyle Waugh made his first appearance as well off the bench.
- Joel Demian, a transfer from Indiana, Will Arnesen (Old Dominion) and Anthony Faupel (Virginia) also made their first appearances as Buckeyes.
- Graduate senior defender Thomas Gilej earned his 50th career start in his 65th appearance.
- Senior goalkeeper Max Trejo got the start after posting a 10-1-2 record a year ago. He led the nation in goals-against-average in 2024 at .533. He also posted seven shutouts a year ago.
- The game was delayed by about 75 minutes because of inclement weather in the Blacksburg, Virginia, area.
