Buckeyes In a Nutshell
- Ohio State advanced to the Big Ten title game with an 11-7 win over No. 5 seed Rutgers on Thursday. Alex Marinier and Gannon Matthews each recorded hat tricks with Jack McKenna also recording three points on a goal and two assists. Caleb Fyock made 14 saves on the day.
- Thursday's defensive performance by the Buckeyes was the team's best against a Big Ten opponent this season. The unit held the Scarlet Knights to seven goals on the day and 33 shots, season lows by a conference opponent vs. Ohio State this year.
- Marinier has now broken into the program record book's top 10 for goals in a single season. With a team and league best 44 goals in 15 games so far this year, he is tied for eighth. He shares the mark with Steve Lauver (1965), Kyle Buchanan (2008) and Logan Schuss (2013). In seventh is Bill Haagenson (1963) with 46.
- Saturday's game is the Buckeyes' eighth against a ranked opponent this season and fifth in as many games. The team is 6-1 in ranked match ups.
- Ohio State earned the first overall seed, and the first-round bye, in the Big Ten Tournament by winning the league's regular season title. The Buckeyes defeated Michigan, 10-8, in the regular season finale April 19 to clinch their first Big Ten regular season championship in program history.
- The Buckeyes' appearance in Saturday's Big Ten tournament title game is their third. The team previously played for the conference tournament title in 2015 and 2017.
- Saturday is the 19th meeting between Ohio State and Maryland in the all-time series.
- The Buckeyes look to earn their first win over the Terrapins since 2018. The last win was a 12-10 victory in College Park, Md.
- The Terrapins won the regular season meeting, 13-8, in Columbus on April 12.
- The teams are 1-1 against each other in the Big Ten Tournament. The last time the teams faced off in the tournament was the 2017 championship game, which Maryland ultimately won by one goal. Ohio State won the semifinal matchup between the teams in the first Big Ten tournament in 2015.
The winner of Saturday's game earns the league's automatic qualification to the 2025 NCAA tournament. The 18-team tournament field will be revealed Sunday, May 4 at 9:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
