No. 11 Buckeyes Battle for 4-1 Win at Illinois

Ohio State is now 15-2 this spring, with a 9-1 B1G mark
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 11-ranked Ohio State women's tennis team closed out the weekend with a 4-1 win at Illinois Sunday. The Buckeyes are now 15-2 on the year and 9-1 in the Big Ten. Illinois dropped to 10-11 overall and 5-5 in the B1G.

The teams split the first two completed doubles matches, with Audrey Spencer and Nao Nishino posting a win for the Buckeyes. Illinois captured the doubles point with a 6-4 court one victory.

In singles, each team won three first sets. Buckeye Audrey Spencer tied the match with a straight set win. The other five courts all went to a third set. Teah Chavez and Nao Nishino both rallied after dropping the first set to prevail in a third for a 3-1 Ohio State lead. Luciana Perry won her first set but lost the second; she pulled away in the third to clinch the 4-1 team victory.

The Schedule Ahead
- The Buckeyes return home for a match against Penn State at noon Saturday and then host a non-conference match against No. 3 Michigan at 4 p.m. April 16. The regular season ends at home with matches vs. Wisconsin April 19 and Minnesota April 20.

How it Happened
- Illinois took the doubles point with a court one win.
- After the Fighting Illini won 6-3 on court two, the Buckeye duo of Nao Nishino and Audrey Spencer answered with a 6-4 win on court three, claiming the final three games.
- In a back and forth match on court one, the Illini duo of Kida Ferrari and Megan Heuser topped Ohio State's duo of Teah Chavez and Luciana Perry, 6-4, for the doubles point.
- The teams split the first singles sets.
- Buckeye Audrey Spencer tied the match, as she was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Kaisa Treiber on court six.
- On court one, Chavez dropped her first set, 6-1, against McKenna Schaefbauer, but the Buckeye took over from there. Chavez won both the second and the third set 6-2 for a 2-1 Ohio State lead.
- Another comeback was complete on court four, where Nishino came back to down Ferrari, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
- Perry clinched the team win on court two with a victory over Heuser. She won the first set, 6-4, but dropped the second by the same score. In the third, Perry won the final four games to take the set, 6-3, for the team victory.
- The remaining two matches were in a tiebreak when the match was clinched. On court three, Ratliff rolled in the first set 6-0 but lost the second, 7-5. The players were at 4-all in the third. On court five, Shelly Bereznyak also rallied to force a third set, with a 6-1 loss in the first and 7-5 win in the second (saving match point at 4-5). They were on serve at 2-all in the third.
- In singles, Chavez is 9-0 this spring, with Perry 12-3, Nishino 9-2 and Spencer 7-4.
- As a doubles tandem, Nishino and Spencer have a 9-2 dual record.
