Buckeyes turn attention to national championships March 20-22 in Philadelphia

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State automatically qualified nine wrestlers for the 2025 NCAA Championships following the 2025 Big Ten Tournament over the weekend in Evanston, Illinois.
The NCAA Championships will be held at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia March 20-22.
The 2025 NCAA Division I Men's Wrestling Selection Show will air at 8 p.m. Wednesday on NCAA.com.
As a team, Ohio State finished sixth with 95.5 points in the 2025 league championship standings. Â
Redshirt freshman Brandon Cannon, the No. 8 seed, took on No. 2 seed Tyler Kasak of Penn State for the Big Ten Title at 157. Â
Cannon fell behind 3-0 after a Kasak takedown with under 30 seconds to go in the first. Cannon escaped early in the second to trail 3-1 after five minutes. Kasak added an escape for a 4-1 lead. Kasak was called for stalling to give Cannon a point before Kasak got a takedown and four-point nearfall to win 12-2 after a point was added for riding time.
Cannon earned a pair of upset wins in the 157-pound bracket Saturday to earn a spot in the title match Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena on the NU Campus. His second-place finish was the best among the Buckeyes at the event.
Brendan McCrone finished ninth overall at 125 to qualify for one of the nine spots available to the Big Ten at the NCAA championships. He won twice Sunday to secure his spot in Philadelphia.
Nic Bouzakis (133), Jesse Mendez (141) and Carson Kharchla (174) wrestled back to battle for third place in their respective weight classes.
No. 9 seed Bouzakis took on No. 4 Braeden Davis of Penn State. Davis struck first with a takedown in the first. Bouzakis countered with a reversal. Bouzakis added another reversal and two-point near fall before earning the pin at 2:23 to claim third at 133.
Next up was No. 2 Mendez vs. No. 1 Beau Bartlett of Penn State in a rematch of the 2024 Big Ten and NCAA title match at 141. Bartlett won the regular-season meeting 4-2 in Columbus.
There was no score after the first period Sunday. Mendez was in top position to open the second and built nearly a minute of riding time before Bartlett earned an escape point to lead 1-0 going to the third. Mendez evened the match with an escape early in the third.
Bartlett then got a takedown with about 30 seconds left for a 4-1 lead. Mendez added an escape to finish fourth after the 4-2 Bartlett win by decision. Â Â Â Â
Dylan D'Emilio (149) won against Andrew Clark of Rutgers in the fifth-place match.
D'Emilio scored first with a takedown at the 40-second mark of the first. Clark escaped to make it 3-1 Buckeyes going to the second. D'Emilio built more than a minute of riding time before an escape by Clark to make it 3-2 D'Emilio after five minutes.
From bottom, D'Emilio escaped to go up 4-2 and claim the win by decision. Â
Paddy Gallagher took seventh at 165 with a win by medical forfeit over Christopher Minto of Nebraska.
At 174, Carson Kharchla faced Dan Braunagel of Illinois for third place.
There was no score in the opening period. Kharchla earned an escape to open the scoring in the second. Braunagel got the first takedown with under 30 seconds left to lead 3-1 after five minutes. Braunagel escaped early in the third to win by decision, 4-1.
At 197, Seth Shumate finished eighth after a medical forfeit in the seventh-place match against Evan Bates of NU.
Heavyweight Nick Feldman won in the fifth-place match against Luke Luffman of Illinois.
Feldman got out to a 3-1 lead with a quick takedown followed by a Luffman escape. That score held going to the second before a Feldman escape made it 4-1 Buckeyes. Luffman earned an escape early in the third to make it 4-2 Feldman, who added a late takedown to take fifth with a 7-2 win by decision. Â Â
Ryder Rogotzke finished 10th at 184 and will now await the possibility of an at-large selection to the NCAA tournament. The Big Ten received eight allocations at 184. There are five at-large spots available at that weight.
