COLUMBUS, Ohio — Redshirt freshman Brandon Cannon earned a pair of upset wins in the 157-pound bracket at the 2025 Big Ten Championships Saturday to earn a spot in the title match Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena on the Northwestern Campus.

Cannon, the No. 8 seed, faced No. 5 Tommy Askey of Minnesota in the semifinals. Askey defeated Cannon earlier this season in Columbus, 11-2.
On Saturday, Askey scored first with a takedown in the first period. Cannon escaped early in the second to make it 3-1 Minnesota before a takedown put the Buckeye up 4-3. Cannon added another takedown in the third along with a two-point near fall and a point for riding time in a 10-3 win to advance to the championship match Sunday. Â

The upset of the day for the Buckeyes came earlier in the day when Cannon defeated top seed Ethen Miller of Maryland in the quarterfinals, 9-2 by decision.
Cannon opened the championships with a 15-0 technical fall victory over 8-seed Chase Saldate of Michigan.
Jesse Mendez, the No. 2 seed at 141, began defense of his 2024 Big Ten Championship, with a quarterfinal win by technical fall (19-4) over 7-seed Danny Pucino of Illinois.
No. 2 Mendez then took on No. 3 Brock Hardy of Nebraska in the semifinals. Mendez trailed 7-6 in the third and from bottom got a reversal to take an 8-7 lead. Hardy earned an escape point to tie it at 8-all and then got the win with a point for riding time, 9-8. Â
Nick Feldman, the No. 4 seed at heavyweight, won his first two matches to earn a trip to the semifinals with a win by technical fall (21-6) over No. 13 Dirk Morley of Northwestern and then a 4-3 win by decision over No. 5 Luke Luffman of Illinois.
Feldman then faced No. 1 Gable Steveson of Minnesota.
Steveson led 3-1 after the first period and built an 11-2 advantage going into the third. The Olympic champion finished off the match with a 15-4 win by major decision.
Feldman, Mendez, Nic Bouzakis (133), Dylan D'Emilio (149) and Carson Kharchla (174) will wrestle for a chance at third-place Sunday. Paddy Gallagher (165) and Seth Shumate (197) will wrestle for seventh place.
Brendan McCrone (125) and Ryder Rogotzke (184) will battle for ninth place and one of the Big Ten's allocated spots in the NCAA Tournament in their respective weight classes. Â Â
