COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 3 Ohio State capped the weekend with a solid 7-0 sweep of visiting Nebraska on Sunday afternoon at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
The Buckeyes are now 16-2 on the year and 5-0 in Big Ten play. Nebraska, who is coached by former Ohio State All-American Peter Kobelt, is now 3-3 in conference play and 10-6 overall.
After struggling a bit with the doubles point earlier in the year, the Buckeyes have found a bit of a groove. They had little trouble with the doubles point on Sunday and then won all six opening sets in singles to grab full control of the match.
Sunday’s win also kept a couple of streaks going. The Buckeyes have never lost to Nebraska, winning all 17 meetings with the Cornhuskers dating back to 2002. The win was also the 70th consecutive home victory for the Buckeyes.
Doubles
- Brandon Carpico and Nikita Filin have had a great season so far and that continued on Sunday. They bumped up to court one and showed they could handle the top spot. They blew past Calvin Mueller and Nikolay Sysoev 6-2. Carpico and Filin are now 16-2 on the season and have won 10consecutive matches.
- On court three, Bryce Nakashima and Alex Fuchs went up a break at 3-3 and then held for a 5-3 lead. With the point on the line, the Buckeye duo broke again and won the match 6-3. Nakashima and Fuchs won both their matches this weekend.
Singles
- The Buckeyes won all six opening sets, setting the tone from the beginning.
- Bryce Nakashima capped a solid weekend with a 6-3, 6-0 win on court six over Colson Wells to put the Buckeyes in front 2-0. Nakashima dropped just four games in his two singles wins this weekend.
- Jack Anthrop put the Buckeyes up 3-0 as he breezed past Nikolay Sysoev 6-0, 6-1. Anthrop has lost just one dual singles match this spring.
- The clinching point came from Will Jansen on court four. He was down an early break in the first set against Roni Hietaranta but rallied for a 6-3 first-set win. He then jumped out early in the second and held the advantage to a 6-3 win in the second set.
- Electing the play the rest of the matches to completion, the Buckeyes would win the final three matches to make it a clean sweep of the Cornhuskers.
- Aidan Kim went up 4-0 in the first against No. 73 Calvin Mueller but then had to win the set in a tiebreaker 7-1. He then won the second set 6-4 to claim his 14th win on the season.
- Alexander Bernard also won his opening set against Anton Shepp in a tiebreaker but then dropped the second set 6-4. In the super tiebreaker, he opened up an early advantage and wouldn’t give an inch in a 10-4 win.
- Preston Stearns was the last match on the court as he and Leo Linquet split the opening two sets. Stearns then won the final set 6-1 to cap the sweep.
