
Buckeye Women Start NCAA Championship Competition

Two Buckeyes in Top 3 after day one
COLUMBUS, Ohio – After the first day of women's competition at the 2025 NCAA Championships, hosted by Penn State in University Park, Pa., two Ohio State women's fencers hold spots in the top three. As a program, the Buckeyes are in sixth place heading into the final day.

The championships conclude Sunday with two more preliminary rounds. All three weapons will begin at 9 a.m., with semifinal and championship bouts beginning at 1:30 p.m. The six semifinal bouts will be fenced on one strip, sequentially in order of epee, foil, sabre. Finals bouts will follow the semifinals, in the same order. The awards ceremony for the women's individual champions and Top 8 finishers and the Top 3 teams will follow the finals.

The Buckeye Women on Saturday
In women's sabre, Natalia Botello, in her first year competing for the Buckeyes, ended day one in second place. She won 12-of-15 bouts, with a +37 indicator. Â

In women's foil, Alina Lee stands in third place after the opening three rounds. She claimed 12-of-15 bouts and had a +24 indicator Saturday. Lee is a four-time NCAA qualifier, with her highest finish 11th in 2022 to earn Honorable Mention All-America accolades.

In women's epee, Gloria Klughardt, in her first NCAA Championship and first year of NCAA fencing, picked up five wins on the day and stands in 18th.

The Format
At the championships, fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After round-robin, the Top 4 finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places and non-advancing fencers awarded a tie for third place. An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.
