Botello reaches semifinals, Lee and Li claim All-America honors
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 2025 NCAA Fencing Championships, hosted by Penn State in University Park, Pa., wrapped up Sunday. The Buckeyes finished sixth as a team, their fourth consecutive Top 6 finish.

Individually, Natalia Botello led the way, reaching the semifinals and earning First Team All-America honors in women's sabre. Alina Lee finished fifth in women's foil to claim Second Team All-America accolades. Solin Li was 11th in men's foil and was named an Honorable Mention All-American. Â

The Buckeye Women
In women's sabre, Natalia Botello, in her first year competing for the Buckeyes, earned the No. 2 seed after pools, going 17-5 over the five rounds with a +45 indicator. She fell 15-9 in the semifinals to Notre Dame's Siobhan Sullivan. Botello finished tied for third and as a First Team All-American. Â

In women's foil, Alina Lee won 17-of-23 bouts with a +23 indicator and finished fifth. She was making her fourth NCAA appearance and earned Second Team All-America accolades after an honorable mention nod in 2022.

In women's epee, Gloria Klughardt, in her first NCAA Championships and first year of NCAA fencing, picked up nine wins in the event to finish 15th.

The Buckeye Men
In men's foil, Solin Li finished in 11th place to garner Honorable Mention All-America accolades. He was 12-11 with a +8 indicator in the event. Ilya Ayupov ended in 21st place with an 8-17 mark overall. Both Li and Ayupov were making their NCAA debuts.

In men's epee, Miles Weiss, in his second straight NCAA Championships, finished 13th and Gabriel Feinberg, in his second trip and first since 2022, was 17th. Weiss was 11-22 over the two days, while Feinberg finished with nine wins.  Â

In men's sabre, Avin Rai, in his NCAA debut, finished 19th and Nolan Williams, making his second trip to the championships and first since 2022, was 23rd. Rai posted a 7-15 mark in the championships, while Williams posted five victories the tournament.

The Format
At the championships, fencers competed in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After round-robin, the Top 4 finishers in each weapon fenced in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places and non-advancing fencers awarded a tie for third place. An institution's place finish in the championships is based on points earned by each individual. A team is awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.
