Ohio State wins 17-1 and 7-4 to improve to 24-6-1 on the season
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State packed the momentum it generated from an 11-game homestand and took it on the road Friday to East Lansing, as the No. 25 Buckeyes swept a doubleheader against Michigan State. Ohio State is 24-6-1 on the season and 3-1 in Big Ten play while the Spartans fall to 9-14 overall and 1-5 in the Big Ten.
The Buckeyes won the first game of the day in five innings, 17-1, and then had a barrage of late-game home runs in the nightcap to secure a 7-3 victory. Reagan Milliken, Kaitlyn Farley and Morgan Frye hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the second game to break the game open. Lorin Boutte was the winning pitcher in the first game and improved to 11-4 while Kennedy Kay's relief work in the second game helped her secure her fifth win of the season.
How It Happened
- It only took three pitches for Ohio State to take an early lead, as Hadley Parisian's lead off home run to center field gave the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
- Ohio State's offense really got hitting on all cylinders in the second inning, as five runs crossed the plate via a Sami Bewick two-run RBI double and Kami Kortokrax's three-run home run. It was the sixth home run of the year for Kortokrax.
- Eleven runs crossed the plate in the top of the third inning to make the score 17-0 in the Buckeyes' favor. Highlights included a run-scoring double by Morgan Frye and singles off the bats of Taylor Cruse, Parisien, Bewick and Reagan Milliken. Cruse also added a grand slam, which was her eighth home run of the season and third in the last five games.
- In the second game, Ohio State picked up right where it left off, plating a run in the top of the first inning thanks to a Michigan State error. The Spartans would respond, however, with a pair of solo home runs in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 2-1.
- The teams traded the late in the middle innings and with the game knotted a 3-all in the top of the seventh inning, back-to-back-to-back home runs from Milliken, Farley and Frye gave Ohio State to lead for good at 7-3. Millken's blast was a two-run shot while Farley and Frye added solo homers.
Buckeye This and That
- Parisien led off a game with a home run for the third time this season. The other two games were versus Alabama (Feb. 15) and Clemson (Feb. 16).
- The 17 runs scored tied for a season high. The Buckeyes also plated 17 runs vs. Merrimack two weeks ago on March 7.
- The run-rule win in Friday's first game was the 11th such victory this season.
- Ohio State came into the game with a Big Ten-leading 60 home runs and added six to that total. It's 66 round-trippers this season has surpassed last year's total of 65. All six home runs on Friday came from different players.
- Thanks in large part to her grand slam in the first game, Taylor Cruse drove in a team-best six runs today. She's batting .643 with three home runs and 14 RBI in the last five games.
- Cruse and Frye each finished with four hits on Friday. Her 4-for-5 days upped Frye's batting average to .400 on the season. She's the third everyday starter now batting .400 or better this season.
