Buckeye men compete Thursday and Friday
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 2025 NCAA Championships, hosted by Penn State in University Park, Pa., got underway with the first three rounds of the men's competition Thursday. Six Buckeyes – two in each weapon – are competing in the event.

The Buckeye Men on Thursday
In men's foil, Solin Li was 8-7 on his first day at the NCAA Championships with a +5 indicator and stands in ninth place. Ilya Ayupov, also making his NCAA debut, was 6-9 (-6) and is 19th.

In men's epee, Miles Weiss and Gabriel Feinberg finished day one in 16th and 17th place, respectively. Weiss was 7-8 (-10) and Feinberg was 6-9. Weiss is making his second straight NCAA appearance and Feinberg also competed in the 2022 championships.

In men's sabre, Nolan Williams and Avin Rai both picked up three wins on day one. Williams also competed at the NCAA Championships in 2022 and Rai is making his debut at the national meet.

The Schedule
The men's competition concludes Friday with two more preliminary rounds and the semifinals and finals. All three weapons will begin at 9 a.m., with semifinal and championship bouts beginning at 1:30 p.m. The six semifinal bouts will be fenced on one strip, sequentially in order of epee, foil, sabre. Finals bouts will follow the semifinals, in the same order. An awards ceremony for the men's individual champions and Top 8 finishers will follow the finals.

The women will compete Saturday and Sunday. On day one there will be three preliminary rounds. Epee will start at 9 a.m., with foil beginning at 11 a.m. and sabre at 1:30 p.m. Sunday will feature two more preliminary rounds, the semifinals and the finals. Sunday the awards ceremony for the women's individual champions and Top 8 finishers and the Top 3 teams will follow the finals.

The Format
At the championships, fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After round-robin, the Top 4 finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places and non-advancing fencers awarded a tie for third place. An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.

The Buckeyes are tied for fifth with nine qualifiers this season. Columbia and Notre Dame each have 12, Harvard and Princeton have 10 and Ohio State joins Penn and St. John's with nine. In all, 144 fencers earned a berth in the national championships. Each program could qualify no more than two fencers per gender in each weapon.
