COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 12/12 Ohio State women's basketball team (24-5, 13-5 B1G) wrapped up the regular season on Sunday with a 90-93 overtime loss against No. 19/17 Maryland (23-6, 13-5 B1G) in College Park.
Maryland got off to a quick start and led by a 24-17 margin after the first quarter of play. Ohio State took its first lead of the game with 3:33 left in the second quarter and led 38-37 at halftime. Maryland then had a 58-57 lead after three quarters. The teams were tied at 78 at the end of regulation. The Terrapins won the game on a buzzer-beater in the overtime period.
Taylor Thierry was the first in the game to reach double figures and finished with 21 points. Jaloni Cambridge (10), Ajae Petty (12), Cotie McMahon (18) and Madison Green (12) joined Thierry in double figures as eight different Buckeyes scored in the game.
How it Happened
Maryland scored the first five points of the game before J. Cambridge got Ohio State on the board with a three-point play. Thierry and Cotie McMahon each made a three-pointer as the Buckeyes trailed 12-9 after four minutes. The Buckeye defense held the Terrapins without a field goal for more than three-and-a-half minutes but the Terps got to the free throw line. Ohio State trailed 16-14 with 3:20 remaining in the quarter and 24-17 after 10 minutes.
Ajae Petty opened scoring in the second quarter and a three-point play by Thierry got the Buckeyes within one at 29-28 with just under six minutes remaining in the half. Elsa Lemmilä gave Ohio State its first lead of the game at 33-32 with 3:33 left in the quarter amidst an 8-0 Buckeye run that saw OSU up by a 36-32 margin. Maryland closed the half with a three-pointer and Ohio State was ahead by a 38-37 margin going into the locker room.
The Terrapins scored the first three points of the third quarter to take the lead back before Thierry's third triple of the game put the Buckeyes back in front. Maryland scored the next four points on the floor and led by as many as four points at 49-45 with 5:36 remaining in the third. Two free throws from Petty got OSU within one at 49-48. The Terps' largest lead of the quarter was again four points before Chance Gray wrapped up the quarter's scoring with a three-pointer. The Buckeyes trailed 58-57 after 30 minutes.
J. Cambridge opened the fourth quarter with a layup to give Ohio State the lead and put her in double figures for the day. Maryland scored the next five points to take a 63-59 lead and extended the lead to 67-61 with seven minutes to play, prompting an Ohio State timeout. The Terrapins strung together a 7-0 run to lead by a 70-61 margin – the biggest lead of the game for either team. The Buckeyes responded with a 6-0 run to cut their deficit to 70-67 with 4:26 remaining. Greene made a three-pointer and Thierry made a layup following a steal from Kennedy Cambridge to tie the game at 72 with just under three minutes to play. The teams alternated scoring as Maryland did not surrender the lead. McMahon tied the game at 78 on a layup to force overtime.
