No. 4 Ohio State Takes Down Baylor 4-1
2/9/2025 5:31:00 PM | Men's Tennis
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 4 Ohio State dropped the doubles point once again, but dominated much of the singles play, beating visiting Baylor 4-1 on Sunday inside the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
This was the ninth consecutive victory over Baylor in a series that started in 2004. The Buckeyes also won 4-0 in Columbus in 2023 and 4-1 in Waco last year. Ohio State faces the possibility of playing Baylor again next weekend, as the Buckeyes start on Baylor’s side of the bracket at the ITA Indoor Team National Championship.
This is the third consecutive match that the Buckeyes have dropped the doubles point, but they once again rallied in the singles matches, this time gutting out a 4-1 victory after hard-fought second sets across the board.
Ohio State is now 7-1 on the season and will be the defending national champions next weekend in Waco.
Doubles
- After splitting matches on courts 1 and 2, Baylor ramped up the intensity and put the pressure on the Buckeyes. Preston Stearns and Bryce Nakashima battled back from being down 40-15, 6-5, but would fall in the tiebreak 7-1.
- Will Jansen and Aidan Kim lost a close match on court 2 to Baylor’s Devin Badenhorst and Luc Koenig. A late break gave Baylor the momentum it needed to win the match and ultimately win the doubles point.
- Nikita Filin and Brandon Carpico got off to a hot start, going up a double break to get to 4-0. The pair then cruised to a 6-2 victory, putting them at 4-0 on the year.
Singles
- After dropping the doubles point, Ohio State responded quickly, with first set victories on five courts.
- Jack Anthrop was broken early but fought back to win the first set 6-4. Dominating the second set, Anthrop took the lead up to 5-0 and finished the match with a 6-0 second set win.
- No. 22 Aidan Kim won the first set quickly over No. 37 David Badenhorst, but was broken at 5-5 in the second set. Heading into the tiebreak, Kim lost three consecutive points and then turned around to win the next six points. With a 7-4 win in the second set tiebreak, Aidan Kim put the Buckeyes on the verge of victory.
- Chris Li started off hot, winning the first set 6-0. His opponent Marko Miladinovic, coming off of an exhilarating doubles win, turned it on in the second set. The pair battled to 6-6 in the second set, and then 6-6 in the tiebreak. Winning the next two points, Chris Li defeated Miladinovic 8-6 in a second set tiebreak to give the Buckeyes the win.
