COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State opens the spring portion of the schedule this week as the Buckeyes will compete in the Puerto Rico Classic at the Grand Reserve Country Club in Rio Grande. The 54-hole event starts on Monday and the final round will be played on Wednesday.
- This will be Ohio State’s 14th appearance in the event. Its best finish is a tie for fifth in both 2017 and 2023. Maxwell Moldovan finished runner-up in 2023 as that was one of four individual Top 10 finishes.
- Ohio State’s lineup this week will consist of five Ohioans in Jack Vojtko, Tyler Sabo, Vaughn Harber, Joe Wilson IV and Timotej Formanek.
- In the fall, the Buckeyes finished seventh at the Folds of Honor Collegiate and the Tindall, sixth at The Blessings Collegiate Invitational, went 1-2-0 at the Barbara Nicklaus Cup and then finished fourth at the East Lake Cup.
- Vojtko finished the fall well by winning the prestigious East Lake Cup with a round of 66. He led the team in scoring in the fall at 71.90 and had three rounds in the 60s.
- Sabo averaged 73.40 in the fall and matched Vojtko with four rounds at par or better. He finished 19th at The Tindall following rounds of 69-71-70 (-3).
- Freshman Vaugh Harber had a solid start to his collegiate career in the fall. He averaged 73.80 in the four stroke play rounds and had the best match play record on the team, going 3-1-1 in the two events.
- Joe Wilson IV returned to action this year after missing all of last season after recovering from hip surgery. He played in all four stroke play events and averaged 73.78. 8.5 of his 10 rounds counted towards the team score.
- Timotej Formanek made his collegiate debut in the fall and played in two events. He shot a final round of 1-under 70 at The Tindall for his best round.
- Temperatures will be in the low 80s with very little chance of rain. No one in Ohio will feel sorry for them at all.
