Jaloni Cambridge’s Career-High and Ajae Petty’s Perfect Night Lead OSU to Ranked Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 12/12 Ohio State women's basketball team (24-4, 13-4 B1G) defeated No. 23/22 Michigan State (20-8, 10-7 B1G) in the regular season home finale by an 89-78 margin on Wednesday evening in the Black History Month game. The Buckeyes finished the regular season undefeated at home for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
Ohio State led by a 31-24 margin after shooting 66.7 percent from the floor and long range during the first quarter. The Buckeyes outscored the Spartans 23-17 in the second quarter to extend their lead to 54-41 at halftime. OSU ended the third quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 79-59 lead into the final frame. The Spartans got as close as seven points in the fourth quarter but the Buckeyes closed an 89-78 victory.
Jaloni Cambridge was the first in the game to reach double figures, doing so less than nine minutes into the game and finishing with a career-high 33 points. Ajae Petty (23) and Cotie McMahon (17) joined J. Cambridge in double figures. Petty was the first Buckeye to be perfect from the field with at least 10 field goals made since Dec. 7, 2016 as she was 11-of-11 from the floor.
How it Happened
Both teams started the game quickly on offense as Ohio State was 8-of-10 (.800) and Michigan State was 6-of-9 (.667) leading into the media timeout. Ajae Petty opened scoring and later made three-consecutive baskets on the floor to give Ohio State a 13-6 lead. Scoring alternated leading into the media timeout and OSU held the 18-14 advantage. J. Cambridge scored five unanswered points on the floor to increase the Buckeyes' lead to 25-16 with 2:17 remaining in the quarter. Ohio State's lead was 31-24 after 10 minutes.
Madison Greene scored first in the second quarter before the teams traded points. Petty completed a three-point play and McMahon made her second three-pointer of the game to increase Ohio State's lead to 45-32 with 5:24 to play in the quarter, prompting a Michigan State timeout. Another 6-0 Buckeye run saw the lead at 53-36 and OSU led by a 54-41 margin heading into the locker room.
Michigan State opened the third quarter with a three-pointer to cut its deficit to 10 before the teams alternated scoring. Ohio State held a 66-54 lead at the media timeout as neither team scored on more than one unanswered possession to that point in the quarter. The Buckeyes used a pair of 6-0 runs in the final two minutes of the quarter to stretch their lead to 79-59 after 30 minutes, ending the quarter with back-to-back three-pointers from J. Cambridge.
The Spartans opened scoring in the fourth quarter from the line and put together a 15-2 run to cut their deficit to 81-74 with 4:16 remaining. The Buckeyes responded with an 8-2 run and won the game by an 89-78 margin.
Highlights
