
Miles Avery a World-Renowned Men’s Gymnastics Coach

Miles Avery, a world-renowned men’s gymnastics coach, spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Ohio State. Avery accumulated a 244-108 record from 1998-2010 with the Buckeyes as the head coach after serving as an assistant coach prior to taking the reigns. He led Ohio State to the 2001 NCAA Championship and was named Division I National Coach of the Year.
The three-time Central Region Coach of the Year (2002, 2005, 2007) and three-time Division I National Assistant Coach of the Year (1992, 1996, 1997) led the Buckeyes to five Big Ten Championships (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007) during his time as head coach, being named Big Ten Coach of the Year in each of those five seasons. Avery coached three NCAA Champions in the all around, nine NCAA Champions in individual events and 22 All-Americans.
Internationally, Avery served as an assistant coach at four Olympic games (1996, 2000, 2004, 2008) and was also a coach at the 1994, 2001 and 2003 world championships. He was twice named USA Gymnastics Coach of the Year (2005, 2008).
Avery was the personal coach of many outstanding athletes during his international coaching career. He coached Paul Hamm, the first man from the United State to win the all around at the World Championships and the Olympics (winning three total medals at the Olympics). Blaine Wilson was a five-time national all around champion and 2004 Olympic team silver medalist (three-time Olympian). Morgan Hamm was a 2003 World Championships team silver medalist, two-time U.S. floor champion and two-time Olympian. Raj Bhavsar won the team bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics and medaled twice at the World Championships (2001, 2003).
Avery began coaching at the club level in the 1980’s prior to his start with Ohio State.
