The Akron, Ohio native shattered the 400m dash world record in Zurich, Switzerland in 1988 with a time of 43.29 seconds; as of today, the time remains the third fastest in the world. As a Buckeye, he was the 1987 national champion in the 400m dash with a readout of 44.12.

Reynolds is the Ohio State school-record holder in the outdoor 400m dash with a time of 44.10 and he owns the fifth-fastest 200m dash time (20.46) in program history. The 400m dash time of 44.10 he ran at the 1987 Jesse Owens Track & Field Classic is the second-fastest time ever by a collegiate athlete.
Reynolds was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995 and was a member of the track and field coaching staff at Ohio State from 1996-98.
In 1995, Reynolds established the Care for Kids Foundation that to this day works with over 500 kids on a yearly basis. The three-time United States Olympian has been an assistant coach at Ohio Dominican since 2013.
