No. 7/6 Buckeyes Hit the Road for Series vs. No. 5/4 Gophers

Teams enter series tied for second in the Big Ten
The Basics
The Schedule Ahead
- The No. 7/6 Ohio State men's hockey team travels for its final regular-season road series of the campaign this weekend. The Buckeyes will take on No. 5/4 Minnesota at 8 p.m. ET Friday and 6 p.m. ET Saturday.Â
- Both games will be streamed through B1G+. Ohio State Radio will carry the series (1460 AM, Ohio State Buckeyes app and website) and live stats will be available through OhioStateBuckeyes.com.
- Ohio State is 20-8-2 this season with a 13-6-1 2-2-0 B1G ledger and is coming off a home sweep of Wisconsin with 4-1 and 4-2 wins. Minnesota, which lost 3-2 in overtime and skated to a 2-2 tie/shootout loss last weekend at Michigan, is 21-7-4 overall and 12-5-3 1-2-0 in the B1G.Â
- The Buckeyes and Gophers enter the weekend tied for second in the Big Ten with 40 points each, three back of first-place Michigan State. All three squads have clinched home ice for the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals.
- The series between Ohio State and Minnesota dates to 1968 but 60 of the 66 games have been since 1999.
- In Minneapolis, the Gophers lead the all-time series 25-4-3 and in the overall series Minnesota is ahead, 48-12-6.
- The teams met in Columbus Jan. 10-11, splitting the series. Ohio State captured game one 5-1 before Minnesota prevailed in game two, 6-1.
- In the last meeting in Minneapolis, Jan. 19-20, 2024, the Gophers posted a sweep with 5-2 and 6-3 wins.Â
- Patrick Guzzo leads current Buckeyes with 17 games played vs. Minnesota, followed by Joe Dunlap with 16. Dunlap has a team-high four goals and seven points against the Gophers, along with three assists. Davis Burnside (10 games played) and Guzzo each have three goals vs. Minnesota and Guzzo has three assists for six total points. Brent Johnson (6 gp) has two helpers vs. the Gophers and Gunnarwolfe Fontaine tallied twice in the series in January.Â
- Ohio State is No. 7 in the USCHO poll and No. 6 in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live rankings this week, its 17th-straight week in the Top 20.
- The Buckeyes are in the Top 11 in the NCAA in scoring defense (2.27 goals allowed per game), scoring offense (3.37 gpg), scoring margin (+1.1) and winning percentage (.700).
- For the sixth time in the last eight years, the Buckeyes have hit the 20-win mark. The squad has also secured its fifth Top 3 finish in the B1G in that stretch.
- Six Buckeyes have hit the 20-point mark. Gunnarwolfe Fontaine is first with 31, followed by Riley Thompson (28), Davis Burnside (28), Damien Carfagna (22), Aiden Hansen-Bukata (22) and Max Montes (21).Â
- Thompson leads the team with 16 goals. Hansen-Bukata has a team-high 21 assists. Fontaine is second with 13 goals and 18 assists and has a point in 12 of the last 16 games.Â
- Hansen-Bukata hit the 100-point mark for his collegiate career last weekend against Notre Dame. He has 10 goals and 90 assists.
The Schedule Ahead
- The regular season wraps up with a home series vs. No. 10/11 Michigan next weekend. Puck drop is slated for 8 p.m. Feb. 27 and 6 p.m. Feb. 28 in Value City Arena.
- Game one vs. the Wolverines is a Wear Scarlet game and there will be a sweatshirt giveaway for the first 700 Ohio State students. Game two will be Senior Night, with a pregame ceremony. There will be a pom pom giveaway for fans and a Burger King crown giveaway for students.
