COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 4 Ohio State finished its weekend at the ITA Indoor Team National Championship with a 4-1 win over host Baylor on Sunday.
This was the second victory in a week for the Buckeyes over Baylor and the 10th consecutive in the series. The Buckeyes also won 4-1 in Columbus last Sunday.
Just like last week, the Buckeyes lost the doubles point but would steal momentum in the first sets of singles and ride that to four singles wins.
Ohio State is now 9-2 on the season and will play Big Ten teams the rest of the regular season. The Buckeyes will play non-conference matches at home against Michigan (Feb. 26) and Illinois (March 5) before starting Big Ten play with Penn State on March 8.
Doubles
- After Baylor won the match on court one, Nikita Filin and Brandon Carpico got the first doubles win as they beat Zsombor Velcz and Alexandru Chirita 7-3 in a tiebreaker. Filin and Carpico also beat Velcz and Chirita 6-2 last Sunday.
- Filin and Carpico won all three of their doubles matches this weekend, dropping just six games combined in the three matches.
- That left the point to be decided by Bryce Nakashima and Preston Stearns. They battled Devin Badenhorst and Luc Koenig into a tiebreaker and the Bear duo would win 7-3 to give Baylor the doubles point.
Singles
- Bryce Nakashima got the first single win in dominant fashion as he rolled past Alexandru Chirita 6-1, 6-0. Nakashima didn’t get to finish his match on Friday but won his two matches on Saturday and Sunday and just three games in those two matches.
- Alexander Bernard had a similar dominant win as he beat No. 85 Oskar Brostrom Poulsen 6-1, 6-1 on court two to put the Buckeyes in front 2-1.
- Jack Anthrop finished his weekend on a high note, beating Zsombor Velcz 6-3, 6-3 to give the Buckeyes a 3-1 lead.
- The clinching point came from Aidan Kim on court one who bested No. 37 Devin Badenhorst 6-4, 7-6(2) on court one. Kim also beat Badenhorst by the same score last Sunday.
- Preston Stearns and Nikita Filin were both down a break in the first set, but both rallied to win the opening set, giving the Buckeyes wins in the first set on all six courts.
