COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 3 Ohio State returned home and took care of No. 14 Michigan 5-0 in a non-conference match on Wednesday night at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
The win was the 10th of the season for the Buckeyes who are now 10-2 on the year.
Ohio State has now beat Michigan eight consecutive times dating back to 2022. The Buckeyes also improve to 38-5 against the Wolverines since Ty Tucker took over in 2000.
After a tight doubles point, the Buckeyes raced to six first set wins in singles and rolled to an easy victory.
Doubles
- The doubles point was close. The teams split the first two matches, and the deciding match went to a tiebreaker.
- The Buckeyes won the first match on court three with a 6-2 win from the new pair of Will Jansen and Alex Fuchs.
- Michigan evened the doubles point with a 6-3 win on court one over Ohio State’s Bryce Nakashima and Preston Stearns.
- After saving several match points, Ohio State clinched the doubles point in a dramatic 11-9 tiebreaker on court two by Brandon Carpico and Nikita Filin. They improve to 11-2 overall on the season.
Singles
- The Buckeyes got off to a quick start, gaining early breaks on every court. Capitalizing on the early breaks, the Buckeyes went on to win the first set on every court as well, ultimately giving them the momentum to sweep the Wolverines.
- Preston Stearns leapt to a 4-0 lead after breaking Mert Oral’s serve twice and ended up securing the victory for Ohio State with a 6-1, 6-4 win.
- After securing a break in the first set, Will Jansen cruised to victory over Patorn Hanchaikul. While Stearns won his final point to clinch the win, Jansen was simultaneously playing the final point of his match, allowing Ohio State to win 5-0.
- Jack continued to anchor the Buckeyes in singles, delivering the Buckeyes their first singles point of the night with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Bjorn Swenson.
- Aidan Kim and Alexander Bernard led in both of their matches before the match was decided. Kim was a mere two points away from victory on court two.
Up Next
The Buckeyes will remain at home and host Illinois in a non-conference match next Wednesday, March 5. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
