
Methodical Offense Leads to 34-10 Ohio State Win at Purdue

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 1 Ohio State (9-0, 6-0) dominated the time of possession on sustained scoring drives to win 34-10 over Purdue (2-8, 0-7) at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Indiana, Saturday. Six Ohio State drives used up five minutes or more with five ending in scores (3TDs, 2FGs). The Buckeyes held the ball for nearly 41 minutes in the victory. Quarterback Julian Sayin completed 27-of-33 passes for 303 yards and touchdown. His top target was Jeremiah Smith who finished with 10 catches for 137 yards and a score. Bo Jackson led the run game with 14 carries for 75 yards. CJ Donaldson Jr. scored twice on five carries. Ohio State returns to Columbus next Saturday to face UCLA. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally by NBC Sports.
First Quarter
Purdue 3, No. 1 Ohio State 0
Ohio State won the pregame coin toss and deferred to the second half. Purdue opened from its 25 after a touchback. Following a pair of short gains, Boilers quarterback Ryne Browne scrambled for a 10-yard gain and a first down at the PSU37. Purdue came up short on the next set of downs and punted it away. Ohio State took over at its 30 after a Brandon Inniss 15-yard return of Jack McCallister’s 45-yard punt. Julian Sayin handed to Bo Jackson on the first play and the freshman running back scampered 70 yards to the endzone but the play was called back on an Ohio State block in the back penalty. Jackson was credited for a 12-yard run prior to the penalty. Sayin connected with tight end Max Klare for 20 yards to the PUR48. Purdue’s defense held at the OSU49 to force a Joe McGuire punt of 44 yards down to the Boilers 7. Browne drove the Boilers to the OSU30 aided by a series of short pass plays. Purdue then faced a fourth-and-3 at the OSU23 and elected to attempt a 40-yard field goal. The Spencer Porath effort was good to give Purdue a 3-0 lead with 4:23 on the first quarter clock. The drive covered 70 yards on 12 plays over 5:29. The Buckeyes started from their 25 on the next possession after a touchback. Inniss earned Ohio State a first down with a 9-yard catch down the left sideline at the OSU40. A connection between Sayin and Jeremiah Smith gave the Buckeyes a first down at the Purdue 34 after a 14-yard gain. Smith then went deep down the left side and grabbed a 33-yard Sayin offering at the Purdue 1 to end the half.



Second Quarter
No. 1 Ohio State 24, Purdue 3
Ohio State took the lead on the second play of the half when C.J. Donaldson Jr. carried for 1 yard up the middle to give Ohio State a 7-3 lead. The scoring drive covered 75 yards on nine plays over 5:07. Ohio State did not allow a first down on Purdue’s next possession. The Buckeyes got the ball back at their 11 after a 45-yard McCallister punt. On third-and-long, Sayin hit Bryson Rodgers for an 11-yard gain for a first down at the OSU24. The Buckeyes added two more first downs, the latter a Smith grab for 7 yards to the OSU36. Smith and Sayin connected again two plays later for a touchdown right down the middle for a 35-yard score and a 14-3 lead. Ohio State went 89 yards on 10 plays over 5:44 on the drive. Ohio State’s Jermaine Mathews Jr. then intercepted Browne on a tipped pass over the middle to give the Buckeyes the ball at the PUR30 following a 23-yard return. The Buckeyes went with the ground game for a first down on a 4-yard Donaldson rush up the middle to the PUR18. Jackson pinballed for a first down at the PUR7 up the middle after an Ohio State timeout. The Buckeyes stayed on the ground with a Donaldson rush for 2 before the two-minute timeout. On third-and-goal, Lincoln Kienholz entered at quarterback and promptly took the ball to the endzone on a 3-yard keeper up the middle for a 21-3 lead. The Ohio State scoring drive covered 30 yards on nine plays to capitalize on the Boilermaker turnover. The Buckeyes got the ball back after a 46-yard McCallister punt to the OSU24 with 47 seconds left in the half. Sayin scrambled the Buckeyes to the OSU44 on a 10-yard run. Klare added a 5-yard grab before a James Peoples catch for 12 yards to the PUR45 with 12 seconds to go. Smith got Ohio State to the Boilers 31. Jayden Fielding then booted a 49-yard field to make it 24-3 Buckeyes with three seconds left. After 24-unanswered points by the Buckeyes, the half ended on the ensuing kickoff.



Third Quarter
No. 1 Ohio State 24, Purdue 3
The Buckeyes opened the second half with the ball and quickly moved inside the Purdue 20 after a Peoples carry of 7 yards to the PUR17. Inniss then caught a Sayin pass for 12 yards to the PUR8. Sayin was then intercepted by CJ Nunnally in the endzone giving the Boilermakers the ball at their 20 on the touchback. Purdue faced a fourth-and-3 from its 40 before calling timeout. The Boilermakers returned from the break and punted it away. Ohio State took over at its 15 after a 45-yard McCallister kick. A Smith grab for 23 yards to the OSU40 gave Ohio State a first down. Isaiah West then carried for another new set of downs with a 12-yard run over the left side to the PUR48. The quarter ended with Ohio State at the PUR28 after a 20-yard pass play from Sayin to Mylan Graham.



Fourth Quarter
No. 1 Ohio State 34, Purdue 10
Sayin was sacked at the PUR27 to bring on Fielding for a 45-yard goal attempt that was good to give the Buckeyes a 27-3 lead with 12:41 left to play. Purdue punted it away on its next possession. Ohio State started from its 26 after a 44-yard McCallister punt. Klare started the drive off with a 20-yard catch on the left sideline to the PUR45. Jackson added gains of 11 and 14 yards to the PUR30. Jelani Thurman added a 7-yard catch before a Peoples rush for 4 to earn a first down at the PUR10. Peoples went for 5 yards before Donaldson did the rest with a rush for 4 before a 1-yard touchdown rush up the middle to make it 34-3 with 6:19 left. Purdue drove inside Ohio State territory to the OSU27 aided by a 15-yard facemask penalty on the Buckeyes before the two-minute timeout. Another penalty, a roughing the passer call, moved the Boilermakers to the OSU8. Purdue then scored on an 8-yard touchdown pass to make it 34-10 with 1:45 left. Ohio State ran out the clock on the next possession to secure the win.
