Buckeyes Prevail Against Ranked Mountaineers

Ohio State overcame a four-point deficit with less than two minutes to play to earn its first ranked win of the season.

NASSAU, Bahamas – The RV/RV Ohio State women's basketball team (5-1) beat No. 21/20 West Virginia (6-1) by an 83-81 margin in the championship game at the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship on Wednesday.

West Virginia jumped out to a 9-0 lead but Ohio State battled back and trailed 17-15 at the end of the first quarter. The Buckeyes took their first lead of the game late in the second quarter and held the 33-31 advantage at halftime. The Mountaineers got to the line in the third quarter to regain the lead, 61-55, with 10 minutes to play. The Buckeyes trailed by four with under two minutes to go and regained the lead on a jumper from Elsa Lemmilä before making a pair of free throws to end the game.

Jaloni Cambridge was the first in the game to reach double figures and finished with 22 points. Chance Gray also scored in double figures with 15 points, including four triples. Bryn Martin scored a career-high 16 points and shot 4-of-7 from three-point range.

Quarter-by-Quarter Recap

Q1: West Virginia got off to a quick start, scoring the game's first nine points amidst an Ohio State timeout. The Mountaineers led by 10 points at 15-5 before a 6-0 Buckeyes run cut the OSU deficit to 15-11 with 3:14 remaining in the quarter. The Buckeye defense kept the Mountaineers off the board for the final three minutes and trailed 17-15 after the first quarter.
Q2: A jumper from Ava Watson tied the game at 19 with 8:39 to play in the second quarter. West Virginia used a 5-0 run to take a 26-21 lead with 6:18 remaining in the half. Ohio State strung together seven unanswered points to lead 33-30 with 50 seconds to play and led by a 33-31 margin going into the locker room.
Q3: The Mountaineers tied the game to begin the third quarter before back-to-back jumpers from J. Cambridge. The Buckeyes led by six points just past the midway point of the quarter, 46-40, following a triple from Bryn Martin. The teams traded baskets until an 8-2 West Virginia run tied the game at 55 with 1:24 to play in the quarter. The Mountaineers scored the final nine points of the quarter to take a 61-55 lead into the final quarter.
Q4: Gray made a pair of three-pointers to get the Buckeyes within two at 63-61 and took a 64-63 lead after a pair of free throws from J. Cambridge. West Virginia responded with a three-pointer to regain the lead and the game was knotted at 66 with 6:15 to go. The Mountaineers scored the next eight points to lead by a 74-66 margin with 4:34 to play. Martin got the Buckeyes within two at 77-75 with five unanswered points on the floor and Kylee Kitts tied the game at 79 with 47 seconds remaining. A pair of free throws from Ava Watson gave the Buckeyes an 83-80 lead and the Mountaineers only made one free throw to end the game.

Game Notes

This is the Buckeyes' first win against a ranked opponent this season.
This is the third time this season that Ohio State has totaled at least 10 steals as the Buckeyes finished with 14 steals today.
This is also the third game of the season that Ohio State's defense has forced 20 or more turnovers. West Virginia finished the game with 25 turnovers.
Jaloni Cambridge was the tournament MVP. Chance Gray joined J. Cambridge on the all-tournament team.
Jaloni Cambridge has scored at least 10 points in all six of Ohio State's games this season. She was the first to reach double figures and finished the day with 22 points. This is her second consecutive 20-point game and third of the season.
Chance Gray recorded her fifth double-figure performance of the season with 15 points and shot 4-of-6 from long range. Gray tied her career-high seven assists.
Bryn Martin had a career-high 16 points, including making 4-of-7 of her three-point attempts.
Q1: The Ohio State defense did not allow a field goal in the final 5:57 of the quarter.
Q2: The Buckeye defense forced seven turnovers in the quarter to bring its first half total to 14 forced turnovers.
Q4: The Buckeyes trailed 79-75 with less than two minutes to play and regained the lead with 24 seconds remaining.
