No. 2 Buckeyes Down No. 13 Tommies in Overtime

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State women's hockey team defeated No. 13 St. Thomas in overtime, 3-2, Friday at the Lee & Penny Anderson Arena in St. Paul, Minn. Freshman Sanni Vanhanen scored the game-winning goal 1:37 into overtime to give the Buckeyes (8-1-0, 6-1-0 WCHA) the win over the Tommies (7-4-0, 2-3-0 WCHA).

The Buckeyes did not have a lead in Friday's game until Vanhanen's goal in overtime. Freshman forward Hilda Svensson scored both game-tying goals for the Buckeyes and Vanhanen, also a freshman forward, helped the Buckeyes secure two conference points with the team's third goal of the day.

How it Happened
- St. Thomas scored on the first shot of the day, taking the lead 43 seconds into the game.
- Svensson tied the game at 17:17 taking a shot from the top of the slot that trickled into the Tommies' net to send the teams into the first intermission even at 1-1.
- Both teams were scoreless in the second period. The Buckeyes dominated the frame, taking 18 shots on goal and holding St. Thomas to one.
- Ohio State started the final period by killing a five-minute power play, including a 5-on-3 and allowed just one shot on goal by the Tommies.
- St. Thomas regained the lead at 12:59 in the third.
- A penalty on the Tommies at 2:39 put Ohio State on a critical the power play. The Buckeyes pulled goaltender Taylor Kressin for the 6-on-4 advantage and Svensson scored again 1:15 into the power play to tie the game at the end of regulation, 2-2.
- In the 3-on-3 overtime period, the Buckeyes needed just two shifts to score the game-winning goal. A save from Kressin led to an Ohio State rush into the St. Thomas zone. Sara Swiderski took the puck from the Buckeyes' zone into St. Thomas' zone. She passed it off to Vanhanen, who shot the puck past the glove of Julia Minotti for the 3-2 win 1:37 into overtime.
- The game was the first overtime contest of the season for the Buckeyes.
- Taylor Kressin made her second consecutive start. She finished the game with a career high 15 saves to improve to 2-0-0.
- Friday marked Svensson's second multi-goal game of the season and fifth multi-point game of the year.
