Captains Q&A: Sloane Matthews

Senior forward Sloane Matthews is the Buckeye's most veteran player at the position. Matthews, who is a member of the U.S. Collegiate Select Team, is a two-time WCHA regular season and 2024 NCAA champion. The Plymouth, Minn. native is an assistant captain for the Buckeyes in 2025-26.
Get to know more about Sloane:
When did you start playing hockey?
“I started skating when I was three, but I didn’t start playing hockey until I was 10."
What are you majoring in and why did you choose it?
“I am a biomedical engineering major, and I picked it because I wanted to work with either heart devices or prosthetics, but now I want to be a physical therapist.”
What has been your favorite class you have taken so far?
“My biomedical engineering domain labs because we got to do an ultrasound project and we did electrical stimulation as a clinical application to bedridden patients to see if it increases blood flow and it did.”
Why did you choose Ohio State?
“I chose Ohio State because of the culture and family here. The campus is so big but when you find your group it makes it seem so small and like you have your actual family here.”
What makes this program or Ohio State special to you?
“I honestly think that it’s the drive that every single girl has and how bad we all want to achieve our goals and win together.”
What is your favorite thing about Ohio State?
“Probably all the resources we have. There’s not really anything that we don’t have that we need here. If we need extra recovery, it’s here; if we need extra support, it’s here. We have everything at our fingertips.”
What is your favorite Ohio State tradition?
“I like singing Carmen after every home series.”
What does it mean to you to be one of the captains of this team?
“It’s an honor to be chosen by my teammates as one of the leaders and someone they look up to, so I am just excited to be able to lead this super special group of girls.”
What is one thing not a lot of people know about you?
“I lived in England for four years.”
What is one piece of advice you would give your freshman self?
“This sounds so cliché but to enjoy every moment because I still can’t believe I only have one more year left and I wish I could have four more still."
What do you think is your strongest skill as a player?
"My speed and stride."
What number do you wear and why?
“I wear number 22 because I don’t like odd numbers, super weird but I don’t, and I graduated high school in 2022 and my best friend from home also wore 22 in high school. ”
