Fontaine scores twice for Ohio State, as teams split series
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 13 Ohio State men's hockey team fell to No. 9 Michigan, 3-2 in overtime, Sunday in Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Buckeyes led 2-0 after the first period but the Wolverines scored the only goals of the second and third and then tallied the winner 20 seconds into the 3x3 overtime for the win.

The Buckeyes, who had a five-game winning streak end with the loss, are now 14-5-1, with a 7-3-0 2-1-0 Big Ten ledger. The Wolverines are 12-7-1 and 6-4-0 3-0-0 in league play. Ohio State rallied for a 4-3 win Friday at Wrigley Field and earned four B1G points in the weekend series with the win and overtime loss. The teams will wrap up the regular season with a series in Columbus Feb. 27-28.

Ohio State led 2-0 just over 10 minutes into the game on a pair of Gunnarwolfe Fontaine goals, with the first on the power play. The Wolverines tallied with the man advantage at 8:46 of the second and tied the game at 3:15 of the third. The gamewinner came 20 seconds into the overtime session.

The Buckeyes were outshot in the game, 36-32, with Logan Terness making 33 saves in 60:20. Ohio State was 1-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill. Fontaine had his fifth career two-goal game and third as a Buckeye. He leads Ohio State with nine goals and 22 points this year.

"We got off to a good start, just what you want to do on the road. We got into some penalty trouble and that allowed them to climb back into the game. It could have gone either way at the end. We'll get home and get ready for Minnesota next week."

How it Happened
- On an early power play, Riley Thompson found Gunnarwolfe Fontaine all alone in front on the rush and he converted. Aiden Hansen-Bukata had the second assist on the goal, which came at 7:29.
- At 10:17 the Buckeyes doubled their lead when Fontaine tallied from in close, scoring off a pass from Davis Burnside from behind the net. Chris Able had the second helper on the tally.
- Ohio State led 10-6 in shots in the opening 20 minutes and had two of the three power play chances.
- The Wolverines got on the board at 8:46 of the second with a power play goal from Evan Werner. The chance was the only power play in the period for either team.
- The teams combined for 26 shots in the middle period, with Michigan ahead, 14-12.
- A goal right after a faceoff 3:15 into the third from William Whitelaw deadlocked the score at two.
- Neither team was able to score through the rest of regulation, as each team picked up a point in the Big Ten standings. Michigan was ahead in shots, 15-10, in the third. Ohio State was 2-for-2 on the penalty kill in the stanza.
- The Wolverines scored on the first shift of overtime, with Jackson Hallum converting an odd-man rush 20 seconds in.
- For the game, the Buckeyes were outshot, 36-34. Ohio State's Logan Terness had 33 saves in 60:20 and Logan Stein made 30 saves in 60:20 for the Wolverines.
- Ohio State had 23 shot blocks in the game. Hansen-Bukata had a team-high four and Able had three to lead the Buckeyes. Six other Buckeyes had two shot blocks.
- The Buckeyes were 1-for-2 on the power play in the game, with Michigan 1-for-4.

- The Buckeyes have a power play goal in each of the last seven games and are 14-for-72 (.194) on the year.
- The loss was the Buckeyes' first in overtime since March 4, 2023 vs. Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament.
