No. 4 Buckeyes Fall Short at No. 2 Iowa, 24-13

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 4 Ohio State (11-1, 3-1) fell to No. 2 Iowa (9-0, 3-0) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena Saturday.Â
The Buckeyes took the lead early after a couple wins by technical fall by freshman Ben Davino at 133 and junior Jesse Mendez (141). Carson Kharchla earned a Top 10 win at 174 to make it 13-all in the team scoring.Â
The Hawkeyes won the final three matches on its way to the victory.Â
How it Happened
125-Joey Cruz (Iowa) def. No. 16 Brendan McCrone (OSU) | D, 6-4
Cruz scored first with a takedown about two minutes into the first period for a 3-1 lead after a McCrone escape. That score held going to the second period. Cruz added a takedown and after another McCrone escape, led 6-2 early in the middle frame. McCrone selected top to start the third and earned a stalling point to make it 6-3 Iowa. Cruz was called for stalling again but got the win by decision, 6-4.Â
133-Ben Davino (OSU) def. Keyan Hernandez (Iowa) | TF, 20-4
Making his debut in Big Ten dual competition, Davino earned a pair of takedowns for a quick 6-1 lead. Davino added three more points with a takedown to lead 9-2 after the opening period. Hernandez added an escape point early in the second before another pair of Davino takedowns for a 15-4 advantage. Davino then added a four-point nearfall to win by technical fall, 20-4. Â
141-No. 1 Jesse Mendez (OSU) def. Ryder Block (Iowa) | TF, 19-2
After nearly missing a takedown on the edge of the mat, Mendez got the first score of the match for a 3-1 lead. He added another takedown and a four-point nearfall to head to the second with a 10-1 lead. Mendez opened the second with a couple takedowns to lead 16-2 after five minutes. Mendez then earned his 31st-consecutive win with a takedown for a 19-2 victory by technical fall.Â
149-No. 2 Kyle Parco (Iowa) def. No. 9 Dylan D'Emilio (OSU) | D, 8-3
Parkco scored first a minute into the opening period for a 3-1 lead after the first period. Parco added an escape point early in the second, the only score of the period. D'Emilio added an escape point in the third. Parco added a takedown and with a point for riding time, won by decision, 8-3.Â
157-No. 1 Jacori Teemer (Iowa) def. No. 17 Sammy Sasso (OSU) | D, 10-5Â
Teemer went up 3-0 with a takedown midway through the opening period. Sasso escaped to make it 3-1 after three minutes. Sasso added an escape point early. Teemer added a takedown before Sasso was given a point for a stalling call to make it 6-4 Iowa after two-periods. Teemer got the escape in the third followed by a takedown to go up 10-4. Sasso added an escape but fell by decision to Teemer, 10-5. Â

Caliendo put the first points on the board with a takedown at 1:45 of the first. Gallagher earned an escape but Caliendeo added a late takedown to lead 6-1 after three minutes. Caliendo added an escape early in the second to lead 7-1 with two minutes to go. Gallagher escaped in the third before Caliendo countered with a takedown. Gallagher escaped but Caliendo earned the win by major decision with a point for riding time, 11-3.Â
174-No. 6 Carson Kharchla (OSU) def. No. 5 Patrick Kennedy (Iowa) | D, 7-3
Kharchla scored first with a takedown to lead 3-1 after the opening period. From bottom, Kharchla went up 4-1 with an early second-period escape. Kharchla added another escape to take a 7-2 lead after two frames. Kennedy escaped quickly in the third but Kharchla held on for the 7-3 win by decision.Â

The wrestlers scrambled a couple times but neither scored to go to the second period scoreless. Arnold put the first point on the board with an escape for a 1-0 lead early in the second. That score held into the third period. From bottom, Rogotzke evened the match at 1-all with an escape to start the third. Inside of a minute to go, the match remained tied before heading to sudden victory even at 1-all. Arnold then got the winning takedown with a minute gone to win by decision, 4-1.   Â
197-No. 1 Stephen Buchanan (Iowa) def. No. 17 Seth Shumate (OSU) | TF, 18-1
Buchanan jumped to a 5-1 lead with a takedown and two-point nearfall. Another takedown in the final few seconds of the first made it 8-1 Iowa. Buchanan added an escape and takedown for a 12-1 advantage after five minutes. Buchanan added a takedown and three-point near fall for the 18-1 win by technical fall. The Hawkeyes secured the team win with the victory.Â
HWT-No. 11 Ben Kueter (Iowa) def. No. 6 Nick Feldman (OSU) | D, 5-4
There was no score in the opening period. Kueter escaped early in the second before adding a takedown to lead 4-0. Feldman added a reversal to make it 4-2 Iowa. Kueter went up 5-2 with an escape headed to the third. Feldman made it 5-3 with an escape and added a point for riding time but fell to Kueter by decision, 5-4.
