COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State baseball head coach Justin Haire has announced the hiring of Joey Holcomb and Tyler Robinson as assistant coaches.
"As we work to build our staff, we will be looking for people that excel in relationship-building, individual development, possess an elite level work ethic, and are winners," said Haire. "Tyler Robinson and Joey Holcomb epitomize each of those qualities. Both of these men have helped teams to record-breaking numbers, and we are excited for them to join us in Columbus as we work towards building a championship-caliber program, both on and off the field."
Holcomb comes to Columbus after one season as an assistant at South Carolina, where he coached the outfielders. He was part of coaching an offense that hit 101 home runs, walked 382 times, stole 66 bases, and scored 461 runs. Prior to South Carolina, Holcomb was an assistant coach at Campbell for two seasons. In 2023, he guided a Camel offense that hit .318, which was ninth-best in the country. The Camels led the nation that season in on-base percentage (.439), were second in slugging percentage (.561), third in runs scored (587), and seventh in home runs (123). The team won Big South regular season and tournament titles and played in NCAA Regionals both of his seasons. In 2022, he helped the Camels to a program-record 118 home runs. Campbell was the only team in the nation that season to record over 100 home runs, 100 stolen bases and 100 hit by pitches.
Before his time at Campbell, Holcomb spent two seasons at NC State, where the Wolfpack reached the College World Series semifinals in 2021. He was the assistant offensive coach and worked with the catchers and outfielders. While there, he worked with eight MLB Draft picks and the 2020 Johnny Bench Award winner. Holcomb spent seven seasons at UNC Greensboro as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, where he helped coach 16 MLB Draft picks. Holcomb graduated from Huntingdon College in 2006, and was a coach there for four years following his graduation. Holcomb and his wife Brittany have three sons; Graham, Reed, and Parker.
Robinson joins the Buckeyes following one season as an assistant coach at Liberty, where he primarily served as the Flames' pitching coach. Prior to Liberty, Robinson spent nine seasons at Campbell. He served as the Camels' pitching coach from 2019-23. During his time at Campbell, the Camels made five NCAA Regional appearances and won four Big South regular season titles and three Big South Tournament titles. In three of Robinson's four seasons as pitching coach (2019, 2022, 2023), the Camels led the Big South in ERA, strikeouts, and opponent batting average. He coached three Big South Pitchers of the Year, two Big South Freshmen of the Year, and first-round MLB Draft Pick Thomas Harrington (2022, Pittsburgh Pirates).
Before his time at Campbell, Robinson was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Brunswick Community College. He earned his associate's degree from Brunswick in 2011 and was a two-year pitcher there. He graduated from Elon, where he served as a student assistant, with his bachelor's degree in 2013. Robinson and his wife Taelar, have three sons; Rhett, Ryder, and Ridge.
