COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a match that started outside and finished inside, No. 1 Ohio State handled the transition in stride and took down Oklahoma State 4-1 to advance to the super-regional round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Buckeyes are now 32-1 on the season and will host Mississippi State next weekend in Columbus.
The Buckeyes set the tone for the match from the very beginning of the doubles point. Cannon Kingsley and JJ Tracy raced out to a 3-0 lead on court three and didn’t let up, winning 6-0. Andrew Lutschaunig and Justin Boulais went up a break at 3-1 and would win the final four games of the set to claim the point with a 6-1 win on court two. In the Top 10 match on court one, the No. 3 ranked Buckeye duo of Robert Cash and JJ Tracy got the first break to take a 2-1 lead and was up 5-2 when the match was abandoned.
Ohio State kept momentum at the start of singles and rolled to five opening set wins. Lightning and light rain crept into the area and forced a halt to the match about an hour and 30 minutes after the start. Following a delay of about 40 minutes, play resumed indoors.
Cash got the first win on court six, beating Francisco Pini 6-3, 6-0. Tracy followed not too long after with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Erik Schiessl on court four to push the lead to 3-0.
Oklahoma State got on the board with a win on court three as Alex Garcia bested Jack Anthrop in three sets. That was just Anthrop’s first singles loss of the dual season.
Alexander Bernard, as he seems to have done all season, provided the clinching point as he beat Alessio Basile 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 on court five. Boulais was in a third set on court one and Kingsley was on his way to a victory, leading 7-6(3), 5-3 on court two when the match was halted.
The Buckeyes will now host Mississippi State in the Super-Regional round next Saturday at Noon at the Auer Tennis Complex. The Bulldogs swept both Alabama State and Middle Tennessee State in Starkville this weekend.
