COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Irina Cantos Siemers and Luciana Perry of the Ohio State women's tennis team competed in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships this week in Stillwater, Okla. The tandem each posted two singles wins to reach the Round of 16, while the duo fell in the opening round of the doubles tournament.
Both Buckeyes won in straight sets to open the singles tournament Monday and then notched straight-set victories in the Round of 32 Tuesday to earn All-America honors in singles. They both fell in two sets, with the first a tiebreaker, in the Round of 16 Wednesday. The tandem's loss in doubles was in a match tiebreaker.Â
Cantos Siemers and Perry are the third and fourth Buckeyes to reach the singles Round of 16, joining Francesca Di Lorenzo (2016) and Kristy Dascoli (2001). Perry was the only freshman in this year's tournament to reach the third round. Cantos Siemers, already an All-American as a Top 16 seed this year, is the program's first three-time All-American (2021, 2022). Perry is the seventh Buckeye to be named an All-American and the second freshman, joining Di Lorenzo, and the fifth to earn the honor in singles.
The 64-player singles tournament started Monday, while the 32-team doubles competition kicked off Tuesday. In the tournaments, all matches are best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all is used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker is played in lieu of a third set.
Singles Day One (Monday)
Perry and Cantos Siemers both posted straight-set victories to advance.
No. 50-ranked Perry was one of the first matches on, and one of the first to advance, dropping just five games to close out her match, 6-4, 6-1, against North Carolina's No. 52 Carson Tanguilig. With the Tar Heel serving first, the opening set started with six breaks in a row for a 3-all set. Each player held the next three games and Perry then broke to take the first set, 6-4. Perry won the first three games of the second set. Tanguilig held for 3-1, but Perry did not drop another game, holding on the no-ad point to clinch the victory with a 6-1 set win.Â
Cantos Siemers, a No. 9-16 seed, took on Virginia's No. 24-ranked Hibah Shaikh, posting a 6-3, 6-3 win. The players were on serve through the first five games before Cantos Siemers grabbed the first break for a 4-2 lead. Shaikh answered with a break of her own to get back on serve, but Cantos Siemers again broke to go ahead 5-3 and she held on the no-ad point for the first set, 6-3. In the second set the Buckeye opened with two breaks and a hold and she was able to make it stand the rest of the match, winning 6-3 with a final break.
