Ohio State carded a its lowest round of the week to finish fourth and punch its ticket to Carlsbad
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State saved its best round for the right time! The Buckeyes carded their lowest round of the week, a 7-under 284, and would go on to finish fourth at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional on Wednesday. That earns the Buckeyes a trip to the NCAA Championship for the third consecutive season.
“This team has experienced a ton of adversity throughout the year and really, throughout these seniors’ entire careers,” said head coach Jay Moseley. “We talked about how you have to be tough in those situations and be prepared for chaos. We had a really good chat this morning about handling adversity and they really stepped up today when we needed a big round. I’m really, really proud of them and happy that our season will continue for another tournament.”
At the start of the day, there were five teams within six shots of each other, battling for three spots. Over the first two rounds, the Buckeyes made a total of 27 birdies as a team. On Wednesday, they made 22 birdies in the final round alone. That helped them break free from playing partners Duke and host LSU and grab the fourth of five qualifying spots.
The Buckeyes are headed to the NCAA Championship for the third consecutive season. That hasn’t happened since the 1991, 1992 and 1993 seasons, more than 30 years ago.
Individually, Neal Shipley posted his sixth top 10 of the season, as he carded a final round 72 to finish at 3-under par. He made a birdie on his final hole to put a stamp on the team’s trip to the finals. Shipley had just five top 10 finishes in his career before this season.
Adam Wallin has been the team’s most consistent player, and he posted another solid round on Wednesday. He carded a 1-over 73 and finished in a tie for 15th at one over par.
Jackson Chandler and Maxwell Moldovan both saved their best for last as each posted rounds of 3-under 69. Moldovan made five birdies and Chandler carded four.
Redshirt-freshman Tyler Sabo added to the team score as rebounded from a tough second round to record a team-high six birdies in a round of 1-under 71.
The NCAA Championship will be played May 24-29 at the Omni La Coste Spa and Resort in Carlsbad, Calif. The women’s championship this week and the men’s championship next week will be the first events on the recently opened course.
