Wildcats score five runs in the top of the seventh to pull away

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Northwestern scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning and prevailed 10-0 over Ohio State in the opening game of a three-game weekend series. The Buckeyes are now 18-11 on the season and 1-3 in Big Ten play while Northwestern won its 10th consecutive game to move to 18-7 on the season.

The Short Story
Northwestern pitcher Ashley Miller limited a usually potent Ohio State offense to just four hits. The Wildcats, meanwhile, scored on a solo home run in the second inning, a two-run single in the fourth inning and a two-run home run in the sixth inning to build a 5-0 advantage.

All of the runs NU scored in the top of the seventh inning were unearned as the Wildcats and five hits in the inning.

Buckeye hits in the game came from Taylor Heckman, Kami Kortokrax, Sam Hackenbracht and Kaitlyn Farley.

Buckeye That and That
Allison Smith, who made her 12th start of the season, and went four innings while allowing six hits and three earned runs. Relivers who saw action on Friday night were Kennedy Kay, Lexi Paulsen and Julia Miller.

Ohio State was able to get out of multiple bases-loaded jams in the game, including in the first inning after the first three NU batters reached base. A fly out and a 1-2-3 double play ended the inning, however. Northwestern also left the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

What's Next
Ohio State's series with Northwestern continues tomorrow as the Buckeyes and Wildcats meet at 2 p.m. Like tonight's contest, it will be streamed live on BTN+ and also broadcast on Ohio State's student-run radio station, Scarlet & Gray Sports Radio.
