Thursday Results
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Lyle Yost successfully defended his 1-meter title at the NCAA Championships, claiming his second straight national title on Thursday night in Indianapolis.
Yost was third coming out of prelims, totaling a score of 375.00 during the morning session. During finals, Yost impressed, leading through the final four rounds of diving. He won his second straight national title with a score of 433.55 and earned First Team All-American honors.
"Our divers are the toughest fighters in that pool," said head diving coach Justin Sochor. "They are humble and strike hard with purpose. Ohio State has a rich history of diving success, and I am so proud to coach this group that is burning that Ohio State diving torch hotter than ever!"
Yost, who last year became the first Buckeye since Patrick Jeffrey in 1988 to win a national 1-meter title, is the first Ohio State men's swimming and diving student-athlete since the 1970's to win back-to-back NCAA titles in any event. The last Buckeye to win consecutive titles was Tim Moore, who won the 1-meter dive in 1973, 1974 and 1975.
Clayton Chaplin also earned First Team All-American honors on the 1-meter board. Chaplin placed seventh in the A final with an aggregate score of 369.20.
Alex Axon placed fifth in the B final of the 500 free. Axon touched the wall at 4:13.70. He earned Honorable Mention All-American status; it is Axon's first career individual All-American recognition.
The Buckeyes closed out the night with the 200 free relay. The team of Daniel Baltes, Mario McDonald, Pete Krusinski and Evan Fentress finished 23rd overall with a time of 1:17.09.
Following the first two days of competition, Ohio State is in 13th place with 42 points.
