Learn more about the defenseman and Capitals' draft pick
Brent Johnson's interest in hockey was sparked at only 3 years old after watching his father play in a recreational game. The Buckeye blueliner began with the basics of skating and eventually advanced to playing hockey, falling in love with the sport.
Johnson, a junior for the Buckeyes in 2023-24, was born in St. Louis but moved to Dallas when he was about 3. He grew up as a Blues fan, rooting for his birthplace NHL team. His favorite player as a kid was T.J. Oshie, who was with the Blues from 2008-15. Now, Johnson looks up to Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche, trying to apply some of the skills he sees in Makar's play to his own game. Johnson said, "He is an elite player who I hope I can play like one day."
Growing up in Texas, hockey wasn't a popular sport among Johnson's peers, however, he shared that he enjoyed playing during his childhood. He said, "I had a great experience, I loved traveling all the time to play against different teams."
Johnson played for the Dallas Stars Elite AAA team for around six years and finished his time playing AAA in Detroit for Little Caesars. For his senior year of high school, Johnson moved to South Dakota to play for the Sioux Falls Stampede in the USHL. Following his year in the USHL, Johnson played at the University of North Dakota for two seasons before transferring to Ohio State.
Moving around frequently as a teenager for hockey is typical for the elite players, but that doesn't make it easy to be away from home. Ultimately, Johnson enjoyed his experience and said, "I liked seeing new places and meeting new people. I feel like I matured a lot in those few years, as well."
As a student-athlete, it can be difficult to balance both schoolwork and athletics. Johnson is majoring in consumer and family financial services, and shared how he manages both school and hockey. He said, "I make sure to get all my work done and do it well, so I am not behind and I am eligible to play."
Something people may not know about Johnson is he is a quiet person outside of his team. He shared that when he is with the team and comfortable, he is outgoing, but around others he can be quite introverted. During the offseason, he likes to go fishing and play music. He also enjoys spending time with his friends and family and playing with his dog.
Underneath all his hockey gear, Johnson may not be who people expect. He is a quiet guy who enjoys spending time with his family and friends, much like many other college students. Johnson may not have been at Ohio State for his entire college experience but shared that there is no place he would rather be and he can't wait for what's next at Ohio State.
