Ohio State and Rutgers will resume on Sunday in the 10th inning tied at 8-8

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team (16-9) opened the Big Ten portion of its schedule on Friday at Rutgers (19-12) with a doubleheader, dropping the first game by a 6-1 score and then having the second game halted in extra innings due to darkness with the score tied at 8-8.

The remainder of the second game, which will pick up in the top of the 10th inning, will be played Sunday at a time to be determined later tonight, followed by the third and final game of the series.

Before darkness put a pause on the second game of the series, the Buckeyes battled back from a 6-0 deficit and briefly pulled ahead in the sixth inning thanks to a three-run home run off the bat of Destinee Noury. Rutgers, however, would tie the game in the bottom of the inning and neither team was able to push across a run thus far in extra innings.

The Buckeyes' offense put 14 hits on the board in the first nine innings on Friday, led by a 3-for-5 showing from Noury that also included two runs scored. Kami Kortokrax was also 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI.

Trailing 6-0 after three innings, Ohio State gradually cut into Rutgers' lead with three runs in the fourth inning and then the five-spot in the sixth. Taylor Heckman, Sam Hackenbracht and Jasmyn Burns all had RBI in the game, too.

In the first game of the day, Ohio State was limited to just five hits by Rutgers pitcher Morgan Smith, who struck out five and also walked five in 6.1 innings. The Buckeyes scored their lone run of the game on a Noury infield single in the seventh inning.
