She hit .500 last weekend with a home run and four RBI
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Jasmyn Burns, a freshman catcher from Menifee, Calif., has been selected as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. She is the first repeat winner of the award in the conference this season.
Burns earned the award on Monday for her play both offensively and defensively last weekend in five games at the Tennessee Invitational in Knoxville. At the plate, Burns hit .500 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI. In the weekend finale yesterday against South Dakota, she went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. In Friday's wins over Missouri State and South Dakota, she had a double in each game.
Behind the plate, Burns was just as effective. She threw out three baserunners attempting to steal, including Tennessee's Kiki Milloy, who stole 40 bases in 2023 and has been successful on 56 of her last 58 attempts since the start of last season.
For the season, Burns leads the Buckeyes in home runs (five), RBI (19) and slugging percentage (.717) while hitting .377 overall, which is the second-highest on the team among players with 30 or more at-bats. Her batting average is also 12th-best among all Big Ten players with 40 or more at-bats so far this season.
Ohio State finished 3-2 at the Tennessee Invitational and continue their spring break trip this weekend with games on Tuesday (at Belmont) and Wednesday (at Austin Peay). Next week, the Buckeyes will be in Lexington, Ky. for the John Cropp Classic where they'll play games against Kentucky (twice), South Dakota State and Columbia (twice).
