COLUMBUS, Ohio — Sophomore Jesse Mendez won his first Big Ten individual championship Sunday with a win over No. 1 seed Beau Bartlett of Penn State in the title bout at 141-poinds. The 2024 Big Ten Championships were contested at the XFINITY Center on the University of Maryland campus.
Redshirt freshman Nick Feldman fell to No. 1 seed Greg Kerkvliet of Penn State in the heavyweight final, 9-3.
The Buckeyes finished in fifth place in the overall team standings with 89 points.
In the championship match at 141 a low-scoring battle was anticipated and the bout did not disappoint between No. 1 seed Beau Bartlett of Penn State and No. 2 seed Jesse Mendez of the Buckeyes.
Neither wrestler was able to score in the first period. Mendez began the second on bottom and got the first point of the battle with an escape. That score held going into the third with Bartlett starting from bottom.
Bartlett evened the bout at 1-all with a quick escape but Mendez countered with a late takedown to win the Big Ten Championship at 141 by decision, 4-1. It was the first loss of the season for Bartlett (20-1) while Mendez improved to 25-2 on the year.
