COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's and men's cross country programs have been recognized as USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced. Addie Engel and Daniella Santos, who were NCAA individual qualifiers, All-Big Ten selections and Academic All-Big ten honorees in 2023, also received USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete accolades.
To qualify for team All-Academic distinction, squads must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period. For the individual award, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and finish in the Top 25 (or 10 percent) at the NCAA Regional Championships or as an All-American at the NCAA Championships.
The Buckeye women's team posted a 3.498 grade-point average, while the men combined for a 3.53 gpa.
In the fall Engel claimed her second Big Ten title, the first two in program history, and she is the program's only three-time All-Big Ten honoree. Engel became the second Buckeye to earn All-Great Lakes Region accolades three times after she placed among the top three for the third time at the 2023 regional championships. She earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Championships and she is the first in school history to make three trips to the NCAA championship race and the first to earn two individual spots. Engel's runner-up finish at regionals marked her 12th career Top 2 finish and her sixth of the campaign.
This is the third USFTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete cross country accolade for Engel and she also was a 2022 track honoree. The health sciences major is a three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Santos was eighth at the 2023 Big Ten Championships, picking up second team all-league honors, and she was a first team honoree in 2022 with a fourth-place finish. She posted her second straight seventh-place finish at regionals in the fall and is the seventh Buckeye to earn all-region honors at least twice. Santos earned her first individual NCAA Championships berth for her second trip to the national meet after running in 2022 when the squad earned an automatic spot.
An early education major, Santos is also an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten choice.
