COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s tennis was spread over to events this weekend and its doubles teams led the way. Bryce Nakashima and Will Jansen earned a spot in the NCAA Championship later this month with a third-place finish at the ITA Central Sectional in Fort Worth while Nikita Filin and Brandon Carpico finished runner-up at the Big Ten Singles & Doubles Championship in Madison, Wis.

Nakashima and Jansen won a three-set match in the opening round and then knocked off the Texas pair of Pierre-Yves Bailly and Sebastian Gorzny 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semifinals. They would fall in the semifinals on Saturday but earned the third qualifying spot after a withdraw in third-place match. They will join Aidan Kim, who earned a singles spot in the NCAA Championship with his run to the semifinals at the season-opening All-American Championship in September.
Jack Anthrop and Preston Stearns lost in the opening round to the top-seeded team, but bounced back to win three matches, including two on Saturday, to win the consolation bracket. They beat TCU’s Duncan Chan and Kaj Quirijns 8-7(2) in the final match.
In singles, Anthrop and Stearns each won their first-round matches, but both lost in the round of 16. After losing in the opening round, Chris Li won his first two consolation round matches before falling in the semifinals to LC Alvarez Valdes of Oklahoma.

At the Big Ten Singles & Doubles Championships, hosted by Wisconsin, freshman Nikita Filin won a pair of singles matches to reach the round of 16 before losing to Wisconsin’s Michael Minasyan. Filin joined Carpico to roll through the first two rounds of the doubles draw. They then beat Minasyan and Collin Beduhn 6-4 in the semifinals on Saturday morning but dropped a hard-fought 7-5 match in the championship to Michigan’s Will Cooksey and Alex Cairo.
This was another good doubles performance for Carpico, who won the Milwaukee doubles title in October with Alex Fuchs and then joined Stearns to win the Fighting Irish Mini Duals last weekend in South Bend, Ind.
JP Day and Reece Yakubov also competed in Madison this weekend. Day bounced back with a couple of consolation singles victories and the pair also picked up a doubles win.
