COLUMBUS, Ohio – Just about the entire Ohio State men’s tennis team will be in action across two events this weekend. A group of Buckeyes will be competing in the ITA Sectional Championship in Fort Worth, Texas and another group will be at the Big Ten Singles & Doubles Championship, hosted by Wisconsin.
The five competing at the ITA Sections are Chris Li, Jack Anthrop, Bryce Nakashima, Will Jansen and Preston Stearns. The four headed to Madison are Brandon Carpico, JP Day, Nikita Filin and Reece Yakubov.
At the sectional championship, nine NCAA Championship spots will be up for grabs, six singles (semifinalists, two quarterfinal playoff winners) and three doubles teams (champion, finalist, third place). This will be the last chance to earn a spot. Aidan Kim was a semifinalist at the season-opening ITA All-American Championship and is already in the NCAA Championship, which will take place later this month in Waco, Texas.
The Buckeyes have had 11 Big Ten singles champions, with the most recent being James Trotter in 2019. On the doubles side, Bryce Nakashima and Preston Stearns won the title last year to become the eighth Buckeye duo to raise the trophy.
- Preston Stearns and Brandon Carpico had a great weekend, winning the Fighting Irish Mini Duals last weekend. They won all four of their doubles matches and Stearns then won all four of his singles matches, including a 1-6, 6-4, 10-3 win over Kosuke Nakanishi of Louisville in the clinching match. Carpico went 2-2 in his singles matches to help claim his second title this fall. He also won the Milwaukee Tennis Classic doubles title in September.
- After punching his ticket to the NCAA Championship, Aidan Kim advanced to the quarterfinals of the $25K event in Louisville and then reached the semifinals of the $25K event in Harlingen, Texas.
- At last month’s Midwest Regional, Alexander Bernard reached the single semifinals and is on the NCAA alternate list.
