Is the only center among the seven semifinalists
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State center Seth McLaughlin is as one of seven semifinalists for the Outland Trophy, the Football Writers Association of American announced on Wednesday night. McLaughin is the only center among the semifinalists.
Ohio State has had four winners of the Outland Trophy, which goes to the nation's top interior lineman (offense or defense). They are: Jim Parker (1956), Jim Stillwagon (1970), John Hicks (1973) and Orlando Pace (1996).
Wednesday night's honor adds to what has been a remarkable fall for McLaughlin, who transferred to Ohio State last February following four seasons at Alabama. He is a finalist for the Campbell Trophy, the nation's premier scholar-athlete award, as well as a top candidate for the Rimington Award as the nation's top center.
McLaughlin's season unfortunately came to an end when he was injured during Tuesday's practice. Prior to the injury, he was the anchor of an offensive line that was a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award and has powered the Buckeye offense to top 20 rankings in scoring offense (12th) and total offense (17th). He has been named a first-team Midseason All-American by six organizations: Associated Press, The Athletic, CBS Sports, The Sporting News, Athlon and The Senior Bowl.
Active in the community, McLauglin volunteered at the OSU 4-miler benefitting the Ohio State Comprehensive Cancer Center, and he took part in the Run Out 5K for muscular dystrophy. His other volunteer work has included Habitat for Humanity; Read Across America; Alberta Head Start; and the Veterans Administration Medical Center.
