The Buckeyes return home to Ohio Stadium to host Kent State on Sept. 19 with kickoff scheduled for Noon ET on FOX.

AUSTIN, Texas – Top-ranked Ohio State (1-1) fell to No. 4 Texas (2-0), 24-23, on Saturday night at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Ohio State totaled 372 yards of offense, including 278 through the air and one passing touchdown. Junior wide receiver Jeremiah Smith led the Buckeyes with eight receptions for 164 yards and a touchdown. Junior quarterback Julian Sayin completed 17 of 32 passes for 278 yards. On the ground, tailbacks Ja'Kobi Jackson and Bo Jackson combined for 94 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Buckeyes forced two turnovers and recorded six tackles for loss, two sacks, three forced fumbles and one interception.

Next up, the Buckeyes return home to Ohio Stadium to host Kent State on Sept. 19. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon ET on FOX.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Freshman cornerback Jay Timmons made an immediate impact on the first play from scrimmage, forcing and recovering a fumble – both firsts in his collegiate career.
On Texas' second drive, junior safety Jaylen McClain intercepted a pass, marking the first interception of his career.
Following McClain's interception, Ohio State drove 81 yards in 10 plays to take a 7-0 lead. Tailback Ja'Kobi Jackson capped the drive with an eight-yard touchdown run, his second rushing score of the season.
The Buckeyes led 10-0 at the end of the first quarter and opened the second quarter with possession at the Texas 21-yard line.
Ohio State outgained the Longhorns, 119-5, in the opening period.
Texas got on the board with a field goal following a 16-play drive with 5:47 remaining in the first half. Ohio State answered on its third possession of the game with a 30-yard field goal at the end of a nine-play drive.
With 14 seconds remaining in the half, junior quarterback Julian Sayin connected with junior wide receiver Jeremiah Smith for a 19-yard touchdown.
- The reception moved Smith past Chris Olave into fourth place on Ohio State's career receptions list and tied him with Devin Smith for fourth in program history with 30 career receiving touchdowns. Sayin's touchdown pass moved him into a tie for 10th in Ohio State history with 37 career touchdown passes.
Ohio State took a 20-3 lead halftime after totaling 240 yards of offense and forcing two turnovers.
On its second possession of the second half, Ohio State drove 43 yards in seven plays and extended its lead to 23-3 on a 48-yard field goal with 8:00 remaining in the third quarter.
Texas began the fourth quarter with the ball at the Ohio State 3-yard line.
The Longhorns scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns, including the game-winner with 25 seconds remaining, to earn the 24-23 victory.

STAGGERING STATISTICS

True freshman cornerback Jay Timmons recorded his first career fumble recovery Saturday, picking up the ball on the first play of the game for Texas.
- He is the first true freshman to record a turnover in his first career start since Vonn Bell's interception against Clemson in the 2014 Orange Bowl.

"I think today we played well for three quarters and didn't play well enough in the fourth quarter. That's the bottom line. We stalled on some offensive drives, and I felt that we had them on the ropes and didn't finish. So, we've got to go back and figure out why that was. I think once that happened, they sustained some drives, converted those fourth downs, and kept us on the field on defense. And then, certainly, we had a chance to kick the field goal to make it a two-score game, and we didn't do that. So, this one hurts. I think that was the message to the guys in the locker room. You know, we won the first three quarters and did not, obviously, win in the fourth quarter. We know that's the biggest part of the season. We have to win the fourth quarter, especially on the road. I can't really sit here and tell you exactly why that happened, but we all have to take accountability and get this thing corrected."
