COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 3 seed Ohio State sprinted out to an early lead and never looked back in a 4-1 victory over James Madison on Friday night in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The Buckeyes advance to face Auburn in the second round next Friday.
Sophomore forward Amanda Schlueter scored just 38 seconds into the match, marking the fastest goal Ohio State has scored in the NCAA tournament. Freshman Jacinda Bonham scored in the 21st to make it 2-0 but JMU would get on the board in the 35th minute and the teams went to the locker room with OSU in front 2-1.
The Buckeyes put the game away with a pair of second-half goals. Senior Kailyn Dudukovich capped her home career with her 43rd goal in the 63rd minute and then Jadin Bonham finished the scoring with a goal in the 68th minute that was assisted by her sister Jacinda.
The Buckeyes outshot JMU 18-8 for game.
Ohio State advances to the second round of the tournament for the ninth time in program history.
How it Happened
Amanda Schlueter only needed 38 seconds to find the back of the net. With a pass from Sydney Jones, Schlueter took on the defense and beat the goalkeeper to the high right corner.
With a defensive stop at midfield, Mirann Gacioch went on a run to just outside the box where she passed it off to Jacinda Bonham. Bonham cut around the defenders finding the inside of the right post in the 21st minute.
James Madison got on the board in the 35th minute and the score was 2-1 in favor of the Buckeyes at halftime.
In the second half, Kailyn Dudukovich scored her 18th goal of the season as Gacioch once again played a great through ball to set her up.
The final goal was a sweet one. Jacinda Bonham played cross into the box that her sister Jadin finished on the back side to provide the final margin. The Bonhams became the first Buckeye freshmen to score in an NCAA Tournament match since Arden Holden scored in 2015 against Virginia Tech.
