DUBLIN, Ohio – Ohio State close the final day of the Barbara Nicklaus Cup on Tuesday with a 3.5 to 2.5 victory over Clemson. The Buckeyes claimed three wins and two crucial halves on the 18th hole to remain in front in the overall match.
The event featured three match play matches between men’s and women’s teams from Ohio State, Clemson, Charlotte and Florida. The point totals between the men’s and women’s teams were combined to determine an overall winner. Florida finished with 19.5 points, followed by Clemson at 19, Charlotte at 18 and Ohio State at 15.5.
Jacob Tarkany was the lead match and he trailed the entire way. But he won the par-3 16th to get back to all square and he made two good pars into the wind on Nos. 17 and 18 to halve his match with Sean Curran.
Freshman Vaughn Harber finished a great two days as he won holes 17 and 18 to defeat Lucas Augustsson 2-up. That was Harber’s second win as he was the top point-getter for the Buckeyes this week with 2.5 points.
Jack Vojtko took an early lead on Rich Wills before surrendering the lead by the turn and he trailed the whole back nine. He finished with a par on 18, holing a 4-footer to win the hole and finish all square.
Joe Wilson IV hit a tremendous approach into No. 18 and rolled in the birdie putt to win the hole and break the tie with Colin Salema and win the match 1-up.
Tyler Sabo then completed the team victory as he made a great up-and-down from right of the 18th green to save par and halve his match with Kian Rose.
The Buckeyes dropped a pair of matches to Florida and Charlotte on Monday so a strong finish on Tuesday was a good way to end the event.
Ohio State will have a couple of weeks to prepare for the final event of the fall, which is the prestigious East Lake Cup at East Lake Golf Club. The annual event takes place every fall and will air live on Golf Channel.
