Jack Vojtko -- East Lake Cup Individual Champion

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State sophomore Jack Vojtko said in his post round interview that he played “boring golf” on Monday at the East Lake Cup. But his closing stretch was anything but boring. Vojtko played the final six holes in 5-under par to win the individual title at the East Lake Cup.
Vojtko fired a bogey-free round of 6-under 66 at the prestigious East Lake Golf Club, home of the PGA TOUR Championship, to top Auburn’s Carson Bacha by one shot. He joins a list of winners of the event that includes Scottie Scheffler, Viktor Hovland, Gordon Sargent and Chris Gotterup.
The Stow, Ohio native was 1-under through 12 holes and then made birdie at the par-4 13th to jump start his run. He then hit his approach to the par-5 14th to inside five feet, setting up an eagle. Another birdie at No. 16 pulled him into a tie for the lead and clutch birdie on No. 17 gave him a 1-shot lead heading to the 18th. A big drive and smart second shot led to a stress-free chip and two putts for the victory. This is Vojtko’s second individual title as he also won The Johnnie-O Individual last spring.
As a team, the Buckeyes shot a 2-over 290 and will be the No. 4 seed headed to match on Tuesday and Wednesday. Ohio State will take on Georgia Tech on Tuesday morning.
Junior Topher Reed had a nice day on Monday as he was 1-over through his first five holes and then made 12-straight pars to post a 1-over 73. Vaughn Harber and Joe Wilson IV both posted rounds of 3-over 72 and Tyler Sabo finished with a 79.
Monday was the lone stroke-play round and it was used to determine an individual champion and set the match play seedings. The semifinal matches will be played on Tuesday and the championship and consolation matches will be on Wednesday. Georgia Tech and Florida State are in the other semifinal. All four teams earned their spot in the event by advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Championship last May.
