Buckeyes improve to 12-1 on the season and pick up their first-ever win over the Terrapins
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Makenna Webster scored with 29 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to lift the third-ranked Ohio State field hockey team over No. 8 Maryland by a 2-1 final on Friday evening. It was Ohio State's first-ever win over Maryland.
Goalkeeper Abby Danson had a season-high nine saves: besting her previous record of seven set at Ohio State's win over Syracuse on Sept. 8. Junior Katie Fichtner and Webster saw goal-scoring action for the Buckeyes in the fourth quarter.
How it Happened
Maryland took charge in the first quarter offensively—drawing six penalty corners and notching seven shots—with Ohio State only recording one apiece. Danson had three saves in the first quarter alone to keep the Terrapins off the scoreboard. The scoreless second quarter was a defensive battle, with both teams combining for four shots.
The third quarter saw only two shots, both from the Terps, but the score still held at 0-0 heading into the fourth. Ohio State scored the first goal of the match after a penalty corner in the 50th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Maryland answered on a penalty corner to tie it 1-1. With 29 seconds left in the game, Ohio State converted another penalty corner for the game-winning goal.
How The Goals Were Scored
- Fichtner scored for the Buckeyes with 10 minutes left in the match on a near-perfect penalty corner insertion by Erin Little. Fichtner totals six goals on the season.
- Two minutes later, Annemijn Klijnhout scored her second goal of the season on a penalty corner opportunity at the 52:43-minute mark.
- Makenna Webster scored the game-winning goal in the 59th minute after a shot by Cameryn Forgash was blocked. She, however, was in the right place to clean up the rebound and find the back of the cage. Webster now has 13 goals on the season, which is only four behind last year's total of 17.
