Buckeyes Open B1G Slate against No. 16/15 Badgers

Teams will meet Friday and Saturday in Madison
The Basics

- The Ohio State men's hockey team starts Big Ten Conference play this weekend with two games at No. 16/15 Wisconsin.Â
- The teams will face off at 8 p.m. ET Friday and at 7 p.m. ET Saturday in the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis.
- Both games will be streamed through B1G+ (subscription required) and broadcast on Ohio State Radio (1460 AM, Ohio State Buckeyes app and website). Live stats will be available through OhioStateBuckeyes.com.
- Ohio State enters the series 1-0-1 after a tie and victory at home vs. American International last weekend to begin the year. Wisconsin is 1-1-0 after a loss and overtime win at home against Lindenwood to open its regular season.Â
- Ohio State and Wisconsin met seven times last season. In the regular season, each team posted a sweep at home. The Buckeyes prevailed in a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal series in Madison, two games to one.Â
- The series this weekend is the first B1G series across the conference for the season. Ohio State and Wisconsin also kicked off the B1G slate in 2022-23, with the Buckeyes posting a sweep Oct. 7-8, 2022 in Columbus with 3-1 and 4-3 wins.
- In the season-opening series against American International, defensemen Damien Carfagna (1g, 3a) and Aiden Hansen-Bukata (4a) led the Buckeyes with four points each. Max Montes had a goal in each game.Â
- Ohio State returned 18 players from last season, adding 10 newcomers (three transfers and seven freshmen).Â
- Three of the Buckeyes' next four games will be at home. The squad will take on Bowling Green in a home-and-home series Oct. 25-26 and then host former CCHA foe Lake Superior State Nov. 2-3. Six straight road games follow (at Michigan State, at Lindenwood, at Princeton).Â
- Blueliner Damien Carfagna had four points in the Buckeyes' 1-0-1 weekend vs. AIC. After an assist in game one, he had a career-high three points, with his first career shorthanded goal (an empty net tally) and two assists, in game two. He also led the Buckeyes with five shot blocks.
- Defenseman Aiden Hansen Bukata had two assists in each game.Â
- Graduate transfer Gunnarwolfe Fontaine notched an assist, moving to 98 career collegiate points.Â
- Freshman James Hong tallied his first collegiate goal, and the Buckeyes' first score of the season, in game one.
- Sophomore defenseman Nathan McBrayer tallied his first collegiate score in the season opener.Â
- Max Montes, a sophomore forward, had a goal each night.Â
- The Buckeyes put 50 shots on goal in the first game.
- Buckeye goalies Logan Terness (game one) and Kristoffer Eberly (game two) split the starts vs. the Yellow Jackets.Â
- Ohio State is 30-27-5 all-time vs. Wisconsin and leads the regular season series since the start of Big Ten play, 25-14-5, with a 29-16-6 mark overall since 2013-14 (including postseason play). In Madison, the series is tied, 13-13-3.
- Last year, the Badgers posted a home sweep with 3-0 and 6-1 wins Dec. 1-2, 2023. The teams met in Columbus Feb. 16-17, when Ohio State notched 3-2 OT and 3-1 victories.
- The teams then met in a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal series, with Ohio State, the No. 7 seed, upsetting the No. 2 seed Badgers, two games to one. The Buckeyes took game one, 3-1, before the Badgers forced game three with a 4-2 victory. The Buckeyes clinched the series with a 3-1 game three win.
- Patrick Guzzo leads current Buckeyes with 17 games played vs. Wisconsin
- Ohio State head coach Steve Rohlik is a 1990 graduate of Wisconsin, where he was a captain on the Badgers' national championship team.
- Assistant coach JB Bittner spent a season on the Badger coaching staff in 2015-16.Â
- Buckeye sophomore forward Thomas Weis is a native of Madison, Wis., and his classmate Max Montes is from Hartland, Wis.Â
- BTN announced its broadcast schedule, with eight Ohio State games included.
- Seven of the eight are home games - Dec. 5 vs. Penn State, Dec. 14 vs. Notre Dame, Jan. 11 vs. Minnesota, Jan. 30 vs. Michigan State and Feb. 27-28 vs. Michigan.Â
- The other BTN game for the Buckeyes is The Friendly Confines outdoor game at Wrigley Field in Chicago vs. Michigan Jan. 3.
- Ohio State will take on Bowling Green in a home-and-home series, with game one in Columbus Oct. 25 and game two in Bowling Green Oct. 26.
