Hong, McBrayer and Montes tally for Ohio State in season opener
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's hockey started its season with a 3-3 overtime tie vs. American International Friday evening in Value City Arena in Columbus. The teams will close the series at 5 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena. The series marks the first games between the programs.

The Buckeyes led 2-1 entering the third period on goals from James Hong and Nathan McBrayer before two AIC goals in less than two minutes gave the Yellow Jackets the lead. Buckeye Max Montes tied the score with an extra attacker goal with 59 seconds remaining. Neither team was able to score in overtime. An eventful overtime saw a Buckeye goal overturned after an AIC challenge for offside and Logan Terness stopping a Yellow Jacket penalty shot with less than a minute remaining. AIC won an exhibition shootout, 2-1 in five rounds, to close out the night. Â

How it Happened
- Ohio State carried play in the first, outshooting the Yellow Jackets, 16-6. Freshman James Hong opened the scoring with just four seconds left in the period, taking a pass from Damien Carfagna and scoring from the faceoff circle. Sam Deckhut had the second assist on the tally.
- Nathan McBrayer put the Buckeyes up 2-0 at 8:09 of the second, with his blast from the point deflecting in. It was the first career goal for the sophomore defenseman and was assisted by Ryan Gordon.
- AIC got on the board at 11:36 of the middle period, with Josh Barnes scoring on a 2-on-1.
- Shots were 14-5 in favor of Ohio State in the second.
- The Yellow Jackets scored twice in 1:34, with a Barnes tally and goal from Dario Beljo, to take a 3-2 lead at 7:25 of the third.
- The Buckeyes were able to deadlock the score on an extra attacker goal from the stick of Max Montes. He put in the rebound of a shot from Gunnarwolfe Fontaine, with Aiden Hansen-Bukata also posting as assist. The assists were the first points in the Scarlet and Gray for both Fontaine and Hansen-Bukata, who are both graduate transfers.
- Ohio State again outshot AIC, with a 15-7 advantage in the third.
- Ohio State appeared to win midway through the 3x3 overtime, as Fontaine beat the goalie on the rush. AIC challenged for offside, and the goal was overturned.
- In the final minute of overtime, a Buckeye penalty on a breakaway resulted in an Oscar Geschwind penalty shot. Ohio State goalie Logan Terness made the save to keep the game tied.
- In all, Terness had four saves in overtime, with AIC's Chase Clark making five stops. Terness ended the game with 19 saves in 64:20 and Clark made 47 stops in all 65 minutes.
- Ohio State had the shot advantage, 50-22, for the game. The Buckeyes had nine shot blocks, led by Carfagna with three, and AIC blocked 18 Ohio State shot attempts.
- In the exhibition shootout, AIC went first. Terness opened with a save and Hong scored for Ohio State. AIC tied the shootout with a goal in the next round and neither team converted on its next two attempts. AIC tallied to open round five and Ohio State was unable to respond.
